Milos Mining Museum 20th anniversary: an educational center on Milos island

The goal of the Milos Mining Museum (MMM), established by Imerys Industrial Minerals Greece S.A. as part of the company's social contribution to the local community, is to promote the rich geological and mining history of Milos, paying homage to all who worked in the mining sector to develop the island’s mineral wealth and contributed to its financial and cultural affluence.
With an aim to inform and to educate its visitors, the Museum organizes periodic exhibitions, scientific conferences, special guided visits to industrial facilities, mines and areas with geological interest, as well as specialized programs for all educational levels, while it also publishes books on subjects related to mineral resources and Mining.
Local society of Milos and visitors to the Museum from Greece and abroad, and especially the local educational community.
The Museum was established in 1998 and the celebration activities for its twentieth anniversary were organized from April to June 2018.
On the occasion of the International Museum Day 2018 titled “Hyperconnected Museums, new approaches, new publics” and the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2019 “Our Heritage, where the past meets the future”, MMM celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of events addressed to visitors, students and the local community, also attended by representatives of the local educational community and the local authorities:
During its twenty years of operation, with over 10,000 visitors per year, MMM has been established as one of the most important tourist destinations on the island as well as an educational center for the community as a whole, through its special and targeted programs aimed at all educational levels. During the last two years, over 800 pupils participated annually in MMM's programs, sponsored by Imerys and implemented in cooperation with specialized organizations and museum-educators. These programs are incorporated within the list of approved educational programs of the Greek Ministry of Education.

Employees at the Museum as well as employees of Imerys who work at the Milos operations, participated in the preparation of the educational programmes in cooperation with educational organizations and museum educators who designed and implemented these programmes.
As the activities of Imerys on Milos are directly linked with the operation of MMM, the Museum has become the company’s flagship for its strategy of building relations with the local community, and its vision for the future is to become a reference point for the cultural and educational community of Greece and even further.
