Duration

April 2025

Description

The initiative to upgrade the electrical infrastructure of the Catacombs, led by Imerys, was implemented with a dual focus on safety and visual enhancement, ensuring a smooth and high-quality experience for all visitors. Works included the installation of two new electrical panels, the routing of 500 meters of cabling using protective conduit, the placement of 80 LED fixtures, repair of existing lighting units, and the installation of two new emergency lighting systems.

In addition, the emergency exit notification system was restored to reduce exposure to CO₂ levels inside the Catacombs, an essential factor for ensuring visitor safety and preserving air quality.

The completed initiative delivered significant and multidimensional benefits. Most importantly, it ensured the uninterrupted and safe operation of the Catacombs by adhering to strict safety standards and replacing outdated or inadequate systems. This is especially crucial for a high-traffic archaeological site where the safety of visitors and staff is paramount.

Furthermore, the upgraded infrastructure drastically reduced the risk of accidents or technical failures that could endanger lives or cause damage. Imerys has thus provided a reliable and secure environment, enhancing public trust and the confidence of local stakeholders.

The energy-efficient upgrade, based on the installation of modern LED lights and optimized cabling, delivered measurable cost-saving results. LED fixtures are known for their energy efficiency and long lifespan, reducing both power consumption and maintenance needs. As a result, operational costs were significantly lowered.

Moreover, using protective conduit safeguarded the installation from environmental damage, extending the lifespan of the system and minimizing future repair costs.

This action reinforced Imerys' reputation as a responsible and innovative company that prioritizes safety, quality, and respect for cultural heritage. It also positioned the company as a model of corporate responsibility and sustainable development, strengthening its public image and opening the door for future partnerships.

  • Energy efficiency and cost savings: Reduced energy consumption and fewer maintenance requirements led to notable economic benefits for the company.
  • Infrastructure protection and sustainability: Proper cable routing and the use of protective conduit minimized environmental wear, prolonging system lifespan.
  • Strengthened reputation and social acceptance: Imerys emerged as a committed and forward-thinking actor in cultural heritage preservation, enhancing its community standing and stakeholder trust.

Working with Organization

The lighting intervention at the Catacombs of Milos was carried out with full respect for the archaeological site’s sanctity and significance, in line with Greece’s legal framework for cultural heritage protection.

Imerys collaborated closely with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades (Ministry of Culture) to ensure all technical specifications adhered to strict preservation and non-intrusion standards. Coordination also took place with the Municipality of Milos and its Technical Services Department to align the project with the island’s broader cultural identity enhancement plan and ensure technical excellence and safety.
