IMERYS Group is the world leader in mineral-based industrial solutions, offering specialized solutions necessary for its customers. IMERYS INDUSTRIAL MINERALS GREECE SINGLE MEMBER SOCIETE ANONYME mines and processes industrial minerals, mainly bentonite and perlite.
The main objective of this initiative was to strengthen preparedness and effective response to natural disasters among both IMERYS employees and the local community of Milos, an island with a distinctive geological profile and historical connection to the land.
Through an immersive large-scale drill, educational presentations, and the active participation of students from all educational levels, IMERYS aimed to establish a shared emergency response framework. This initiative highlighted the company’s role not only as an employer but as an engaged and responsible member of the local society.
The initiative is part of a broader set of IMERYS actions aimed at supporting the local community and promoting a culture of prevention, safety, and cooperation. With the involvement of employees, students, and educators, a unified front of awareness and readiness was formed, which can serve as a model for other regions.
The initiative was aimed at students of all educational levels on the island of Milos, specifically: students of Primary Schools, Junior High School, General High School and Vocational High School. At the same time, the action involved all employees of IMERYS operating in Milos.
March 2025
IMERYS in Milos undertook a major initiative by organizing and executing a comprehensive earthquake and tsunami response drill. The primary objective was to enhance the preparedness of both the company's workforce and the wider local community, underscoring IMERYS' commitment to safety and social responsibility in the area where it operates.
Given the island's distinct geology and high seismic activity, it is imperative to have tailored risk management and emergency preparedness plans. The drill, designed and implemented by the company's Safety Department in collaboration with EHSQ Development, was a coordinated and holistic action involving all relevant stakeholders.
The drill scenario was based on the simulation of a strong earthquake, followed by a tsunami warning due to seismic activity in the wider Cyclades region. During the exercise, IMERYS employees followed pre-defined evacuation protocols and gathered at designated safe assembly points. A simulated rescue operation was also conducted, involving immediate first aid provided by the company’s doctor and nurse, followed by the safe transport of the “injured” individual to the Milos Health Center using an ambulance and with the support of the Samaritan volunteer team.
The exercise emphasized precision and speed at every stage, from building evacuation and movement to safety zones, to timely ambulance arrival and effective coordination between all involved parties. All phases were completed with a high level of discipline and organization, without any signs of panic or disorder.
The same exercise was successfully carried out in the schools of Milos, involving over 550 students and their teachers. Participating institutions included the island’s primary schools as well as secondary education units (Junior High School, General High School and Vocational High School). Students and educators actively participated, showing a high level of responsibility and adherence to all procedures.
This initiative provided a valuable hands-on experience, helping participants develop a better understanding of how to respond effectively in the event of an earthquake or tsunami. It also strengthened cooperation among stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and resilient community response during emergencies.
The initiative reflects IMERYS’ strong sense of corporate social responsibility, going beyond its business role and demonstrating genuine concern for the safety and well-being of the local population. Through experiential participation and collaboration with local authorities and schools, a unified network of trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility was cultivated.
The successful implementation of the drill stands as a model of responsible and systematic action, showcasing the importance of proactive planning and community-business collaboration. All participants gained invaluable knowledge and awareness, fostering a safety culture that is vital for sustainable development and the protection of life and property.
Throughout the drill, participants demonstrated exemplary behavior. The siren signaling the start of emergency procedures did not cause panic or confusion. Instead, responses were calm, coordinated, and methodical. The sight of employees, students, and educators following instructions diligently, along with the efficient operation of the rescue teams, highlighted the value of ongoing training and cooperation.
Cultivating a culture of prevention is not something that can be achieved overnight. However, initiatives such as this significantly contribute to raising awareness and preparedness against natural hazards.
It is clear that one does not need to experience a real disaster to understand the importance of preparation and cooperation. Participating in well-organized drills and gaining practical skills promotes safety and solidarity within the community. IMERYS' initiative demonstrates a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to the protection of people and infrastructure on the island, serving as a role model.
Ultimately, this initiative is a tangible example of how structured planning, training, and collaboration can foster a safer environment for all. The synergy between industry and society, with a shared goal of safety and prevention, is the cornerstone of stable and sustainable development.

Children, in particular, gained a sense of security and a clear understanding, presented in an accessible way, of how to protect themselves in challenging scenarios. With more than 600 participants demonstrating commitment, discipline, and cooperation, the initiative stood out for the enthusiasm and seriousness it inspired across all levels.
The positive feedback from participants was remarkable; many reported feeling better informed and more prepared to follow safety protocols, thereby boosting their confidence in responding to extreme natural events.
Milos, Cyclades, Greece
The initiative was implemented by Imerys Greece, which undertook the full organization, coordination, and execution of the action in collaboration with the company EHSQ Development E.E. The active participation of schools in Milos, both primary and secondary education, was also significant, contributing to the meaningful involvement of students and teachers. This collaboration ensured a comprehensive and multidimensional approach to emergency preparedness and education.
The drill involved the active participation of IMERYS Milos employees, the company’s doctor and nurse, the team of Samaritan volunteers, as well as EHSQ Development, which contributed to the design and implementation of the exercise. In addition, more than 550 students from all schools on the island participated in demonstrations of the wide reach and collective engagement of the local community.
