BUSINESS: 336 PRACTICES
Lidl Hellas has been active in Greece since 1999. Today the company employs more than 6700 workers, while its network includes 231 stores and 5 state-of-the-art supply centers. It is included for the 9th consecutive year in "The Most Sustainable Companies in Greece", while for the 7th consecutive year it receives the distinction of "Top Employer" in Greece and Europe.
At Lidl Greece we are proud because we build perspective for all our stakeholders, on solid, sustainable foundations. Business ethics are a source of inspiration for our values and the chain of responsibility becomes an act of sustainable empowerment for our own people, consumers, partners.
Sustainability for us is not a simple wording, but shapes our business profile and runs horizontally through our daily life.
We are moving on the trajectory of a new sustainability strategy, which develops in three dynamic axes: "Good for the planet", "Good for people" and "Good for you" with the individual actions spread over six strategic pillars: climate protection, respect for biodiversity, conservation of resources, business law, health protection and participation in dialogue. It is a functional as well as an innovative approach that allows us to respond with best practices, at the right time, to a variety of challenges. We adapt quickly, build efficiency and remain sustainable, extroverted and beneficial to the whole.
2024 was recorded as the warmest year on record, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, while the average concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere reached an all-time high. Greece, as a Mediterranean country, is experiencing the effects of the climate crisis with increasing intensity, with devastating fires and flooding affecting critical areas annually. In 2023, the Evros fire was the largest burnt area in Europe's history, with more than 720,000 hectares destroyed.
Lidl Hellas, with a firm commitment to sustainability, has been implementing a strategic partnership with the international non-profit organisation We4All since 2022, aiming to prevent and restore the effects of natural disasters.
The initiative is based on four main pillars:
Restoring ecosystems through tree planting: planting trees in areas affected by fires or floods helps to regenerate biodiversity, stabilise soil, reduce erosion and retain water. At the same time, trees act as natural filters for air and help reduce carbon dioxide, making areas more resilient to climate change.
Cleaning up forest and urban ecosystems. Clean-ups reduce the risk of fire spreading, protecting both the natural environment and human lives.
Creating a sustainable culture of prevention: Through educational programs for employees, students and citizens, environmental awareness and knowledge of natural disaster prevention is cultivated. Understanding the importance of ecosystems, even in urban areas, reinforces collective responsibility.
Long-term strategic commitment: Action is replicable and consistent, with the aim of annually strengthening the resilience of local ecosystems and communities; actions indirectly strengthen the Net Zero target by 2050, as they work beyond the value chain, strengthening environmental resilience, prevention and social mobilization against the climate crisis.
Lidl Hellas is the first retailer in Greece to receive the Global Defender distinction from We4All, a recognition that confirms its leadership in environmental action. The active participation of the company's employees, partners and volunteers reinforces the momentum of the initiative and demonstrates the power of collective effort for a sustainable future.
Lidl Hellas' initiative in cooperation with We4All is addressed to a targeted and multi-level audience, aiming to strengthen environmental resilience and natural disaster prevention through collaborative actions.
The initiative aims to raise inter-generational awareness and strengthen cooperation between the private sector, society and local authorities, creating a model for collective action to prevent and respond to natural disasters.
Lidl Hellas' partnership with We4All started in 2022 and is dynamically evolving with annual planning, implementation and evaluation of actions. Each year is a self-contained cycle of actions, aiming at continuous improvement, strengthening participation and adapting to the environmental needs of each year.
The action continues into 2025, with actions already planned, while the overall planning is part of a long-term environmental responsibility plan. The aim is to gradually strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and to continuously cultivate environmental awareness within and outside the organisation.
The initiative is an integral part of Lidl Hellas' Climate Strategy 2.0 and is linked to the strategic pillar "Climate Protection
Lidl Hellas, in cooperation with We4All, is implementing a nationwide initiative for the restoration and protection of the natural environment, with emphasis on the prevention of natural disasters, starting in 2022. The action includes tree planting, clean-ups for fire protection and educational programmes for employees and students.
Since the start of the cooperation, a total of 16,700 trees have been planted, of which 6,700 in 2024 alone, in areas such as Dadia, the Axios Delta, Ancient Olympia, Evia and Thessaloniki. At the same time, clean-ups were organised in forest and urban areas, such as in Vrilissia, to prevent fires.
The initiative stands out for its combined approach: restoring ecosystems, preventing risks and raising environmental awareness. The actions are implemented in cooperation with local bodies (municipalities, forestry offices) and with the participation of Lidl Hellas employees.
Lidl Hellas is the first retailer in Greece to receive the Global Defender distinction from We4All, confirming its commitment to a sustainable future.
Since the start of Lidl Hellas' partnership with We4All in 2022, a total of 16,700 trees have been planted in dozens of areas across the country, contributing substantially to reforestation, restoring affected ecosystems and strengthening resilience to the climate crisis. In 2024 alone, 6,700 new saplings were planted in areas in need of reforestation and land clearing is estimated at over 34,000 m2.
During 2024, a total of 9 actions were implemented, in which 137 Lidl Hellas employees and 109 students participated. The actions included reforestation, fire protection, educational seminars, school activities and environmental walks, strengthening the connection with nature and environmental awareness.
Lidl Hellas' actions in the framework of its cooperation with We4All are implemented throughout the Greek territory, aiming both at the restoration of areas affected by natural disasters and at raising awareness among employees in every corner of the company's network - not only in large urban centres.
The selection of locations is based on two main criteria:
Environmental need, such as areas affected by fires or floods.
Internal activation, aiming to raise the environmental awareness of employees throughout Lidl Hellas, from mainland Greece to the islands.
This geographical dispersion enhances the experiential connection of the company's people with nature and strengthens local social participation, reinforcing the positive impact of the actions at national level.
The initiative is implemented in strategic partnership with We4All, an international non-profit organization founded in 2018 with the mission to restore and protect the natural environment. We4All has expertise, experience and a network of partners throughout Greece, which makes the collaboration meaningful and effective. Lidl Hellas used this partnership to design and implement targeted actions in ecosystems affected by natural disasters, such as Dadia, Ancient Olympia, Evia and Thessaloniki, aiming at reforestation, fire prevention and strengthening local resilience.
Lidl Hellas' collaboration with We4All has brought significant quantitative and qualitative benefits for the company, its employees and society. The active participation of 137 associates in activities across Greece, with paid leave and the possibility of family participation, strengthened the corporate culture and sense of purpose. The variety of activities - from tree planting (6,700 trees) and fire protection, to educational seminars and environmental walks - met critical environmental needs and strengthened employees' connection with nature. The participation of 109 students in school activities and 50+ employees in webinars promoted environmental education and fostered intergenerational awareness.
Lidl's new future goal is to create an internal Sustainability Community that will act as a core of environmental action and awareness within Lidl Hellas, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to a sustainable future
Lidl Hellas' collaboration with We4All has substantially strengthened its strategic commitment to sustainability, within the framework of the Climate Protection pillar and Climate Strategy 2.0.
The activation of employees and the integration of environmental responsibility in the corporate culture reinforced the sense of purpose and the connection with Lidl Hellas' values. At the same time, the extroversion of the initiative strengthened the company's reputation as a responsible employer and sustainable retailer, while its recognition as a Global Defender by We4All confirmed its leading role in the industry.
The action is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 13: Climate Action
The initiative serves as a model of good practice, building trust with customers, partners and society, and laying the foundation for creating an internal sustainability community.
