Plastic Free Greece: Strategic environmental communication and mobilization initiative

BUSINESS: 403 PRACTICES

Lidl Hellas has been active in Greece since 1999. Today the company employs more than 6700 workers, while its network includes 231 stores and 5 state-of-the-art supply centers. It is included for the 9th consecutive year in "The Most Sustainable Companies in Greece", while for the 7th consecutive year it receives the distinction of "Top Employer" in Greece and Europe.
At Lidl Greece we are proud because we build perspective for all our stakeholders, on solid, sustainable foundations. Business ethics are a source of inspiration for our values and the chain of responsibility becomes an act of sustainable empowerment for our own people, consumers, partners.
Sustainability for us is not a simple wording, but shapes our business profile and runs horizontally through our daily life.
We are moving on the trajectory of a new sustainability strategy, which develops in three dynamic axes: "Good for the planet", "Good for people" and "Good for you" with the individual actions spread over six strategic pillars: climate protection, respect for biodiversity, conservation of resources, business law, health protection and participation in dialogue. It is a functional as well as an innovative approach that allows us to respond with best practices, at the right time, to a variety of challenges. We adapt quickly, build efficiency and remain sustainable, extroverted and beneficial to the whole.
Plastic Free Greece aims to publicly and consistently highlight the issue of marine and coastal pollution caused by plastic waste and to transform environmental awareness into collective action. For Lidl Hellas, the programme is not a one-off clean-up activity, but a purpose-led communication and mobilization platform that connects nature protection with the everyday responsibility of citizens, visitors, local authorities, employees and businesses.
The issue is directly linked to Greece: its coastlines, islands, tourism destinations and marine ecosystems, which are under constant pressure from single-use plastics and other waste. Through Plastic Free Greece, Lidl Hellas seeks to cultivate environmental awareness, encourage the reduction of excessive plastic use, promote responsible consumption and strengthen the understanding that environmental protection requires collaboration.
The initiative is part of Lidl Hellas' sustainability strategy, under the pillar Good for the Planet, and is linked to the Schwarz Group's international REset Resources / REset Plastic strategy, with emphasis on REduce, REcycle and REmove. It is also connected to the company's commitments to reduce plastic use, increase recyclability and protect natural resources. Its goal is to operate as a platform for information, education and participation, with a clear message: less plastic, more responsibility, cleaner seas and coastlines.

The initiative addresses multiple audiences: local communities and municipal authorities in the areas of implementation; Lidl Hellas employees, who act as ambassadors of corporate volunteering and sustainability culture; consumers and visitors, who are encouraged to rethink their relationship with single-use plastics; civil society organizations and local stakeholders; and the younger generation, through a positive, hands-on narrative that makes environmental protection understandable and participatory.
The initiative began in June 2020 in Santorini and continues for the sixth consecutive year, with annual implementation and expansion to new destinations.
Plastic Free Greece began in 2020 as Plastic Free Santorini and has evolved into a nationwide environmental communication, awareness and mobilization initiative. It is implemented by Lidl Hellas in cooperation with the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, within the framework of the national initiative Greece Without Single-Use Plastics.
In 2025, for the sixth consecutive year, the programme travelled to nine destinations: Andros, Attica, Thessaloniki, Trikala, Patras, Santorini, Tinos, Paros and Kythnos. The Lidl Hellas team, representatives of the Foundation, volunteers, the Dive in Action diving team and Lidl Hellas ambassadors Gogo Delogianni, Giorgos Kapoutzidis and Antonis Tsapatakis joined forces in coastal and underwater clean-ups, as well as in awareness meetings with municipalities and local stakeholders.
The initiative's distinctive feature is that it does not stop at the physical removal of waste. It functions as a recurring environmental communication model that combines awareness, advocacy, stakeholder engagement, corporate volunteering, local mobilization and measurable environmental impact. For the second consecutive year, the programme was also extended to areas where Lidl Hellas operates logistics centers, bringing employees into both the narrative and the action of the purpose.
The main challenge was social and communicational: how to move the conversation from passive awareness to active participation. The answer was a programme with consistency, geographical reach, institutional partnerships, voluntary participation and a public message that connects environmental protection with a more sustainable everyday life.

Plastic Free Greece has delivered measurable environmental and social impact. In 2025, 24 clean-up activities were carried out, 14 coastal and 10 underwater, across nine destinations in Greece. With the contribution of 118 volunteers, 9,314 kilograms of waste were collected. Among the key findings were 2,404 small plastic pieces, 1,043 cigarette butts and 832 water/soft drink bottles from coastal clean-ups, as well as 721 bottles and 551 aluminium cans from underwater clean-ups.
Since the launch of the initiative in June 2020, a total of 113 clean-ups have been implemented, 67 coastal and 46 underwater, removing more than 20 tons of waste from Greek beaches and seabeds. More than 500 volunteers have been mobilized, demonstrating that the initiative has evolved into a consistent public awareness programme with a multiplier effect.
The impact on the target audience extends beyond the day of each clean-up. Through its presence in different destinations, meetings with local authorities and employee activation, the programme communicates the message of responsible plastic use to local communities, visitors and the wider public. In this way, nature protection becomes more visible, more understandable and more participatory.
Nationwide: Andros, Attica, Thessaloniki, Trikala, Patras, Santorini, Tinos, Paros, Kythnos and previous Plastic Free Greece destinations.
The initiative is implemented in cooperation with the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment and Energy. In each destination, local authorities, local stakeholders, volunteers and the Dive in Action diving team participate, creating a partnership model between the private, public and non-profit sectors.
Lidl Hellas employees, Foundation representatives, volunteers from local stores, the Dive in Action team and citizens participate in the implementation. In 2025, 118 volunteers in total - 94 adult and 24 minor - took part. For the second consecutive year, employees from Lidl Hellas logistics centers in Attica, Thessaloniki, Trikala and Patras were also activated, strengthening corporate volunteering and the company's internal sustainability culture.
For Lidl Hellas, Plastic Free Greece strengthens its position as a responsible retailer that uses its scale, partnerships and public influence to protect the environment. The initiative reinforces the company's sustainability strategy by connecting its plastic reduction commitments with field actions that deliver measurable results.
It also strengthens stakeholder engagement with public bodies, municipalities, local communities, employees, volunteers and civil society organizations. Meetings with local government representatives create open dialogue around environmental protection, while the participation of employees from logistics centers strengthens the internal sustainability culture and sense of pride.
The programme also serves as an example for the retail sector, proving that a large company can contribute not only to reducing its own environmental footprint, but also to shaping behaviours. Lidl Hellas gains credibility, social acceptance and a meaningful connection with its purpose, while the initiative is linked to SDG 14 Life Below Water, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals.
