BUSINESS: 537 PRACTICES
Lidl Hellas has been active in Greece since 1999. Today the company employs more than 6700 workers, while its network includes 231 stores and 5 state-of-the-art supply centers. It is included for the 9th consecutive year in "The Most Sustainable Companies in Greece", while for the 7th consecutive year it receives the distinction of "Top Employer" in Greece and Europe.
At Lidl Greece we are proud because we build perspective for all our stakeholders, on solid, sustainable foundations. Business ethics are a source of inspiration for our values and the chain of responsibility becomes an act of sustainable empowerment for our own people, consumers, partners.
Sustainability for us is not a simple wording, but shapes our business profile and runs horizontally through our daily life.
We are moving on the trajectory of a new sustainability strategy, which develops in three dynamic axes: "Good for the planet", "Good for people" and "Good for you" with the individual actions spread over six strategic pillars: climate protection, respect for biodiversity, conservation of resources, business law, health protection and participation in dialogue. It is a functional as well as an innovative approach that allows us to respond with best practices, at the right time, to a variety of challenges. We adapt quickly, build efficiency and remain sustainable, extroverted and beneficial to the whole.
Lidl Hellas, in collaboration with the Center for Talented Youth (CTY Greece) at Anatolia College, has launched an initiative with the primary goal of supporting high-achieving and gifted students through scholarships. The company aims to provide equal opportunities to children from across Greece, regardless of their financial background, enabling them to participate in innovative educational programs that foster knowledge, critical thinking, and creativity. This initiative is also part of Lidl Hellas’ broader sustainability strategy, focusing on creating social value and supporting young people on their path toward a better future.
The initiative targets students from all over Greece who demonstrate exceptional academic performance and meet specific income criteria. Selection is based on their performance in the CTY Greece entrance exams, ensuring that scholarships are awarded to students with genuine potential and need. Indirectly, the initiative also supports the families of these students by offering access to educational opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.
The initiative has been ongoing since 2014 and continues actively in 2025.
Our collaboration with CTY Greece has already spanned 11 years, and this year marks the beginning of the 12th. Lidl Hellas continues to support the Center for Talented Youth (CTY Greece) at Anatolia College, offering students with exceptional academic abilities from all educational levels the opportunity to receive scholarships and attend innovative educational programs that inspire and excite.
Since 2014, Lidl Hellas has annually provided 25 full or 50 partial scholarships to elementary, middle, and high school students from Greece who are unable to cover the cost of participating in the Center’s programs, contributing a total of €600,000. The selection of scholarship recipients is carried out by CTY Greece, based on their academic abilities, their scores in the Center’s entrance exams, and specific income criteria. Additionally, Lidl Hellas covers the cost of their participation in CTY Greece’s summer programs and has supported awareness-raising activities about the Center.
Students are selected through talent identification exams. In total, more than 16,000 students have participated in these exams, and over 7,500 students from 3rd grade of elementary school to 11th grade of high school have attended CTY Greece’s programs to date. More than 1,600 children have received scholarships for the summer programs based on their family income, while over 1,500 teachers from 150 different schools across Greece have taken part in free professional development workshops.
The impact of the initiative is significant and multifaceted. Since 2014, Lidl Hellas has invested over 1 million euros in scholarships and educational activities, and by the end of 2024, more than 520 scholarships are expected to have been awarded. This investment goes beyond financial support, extending to the development of specialized courses such as "FoodPower: Highway to Health," which integrates disciplines like Biology, Chemistry, and Nutrition, tailored to modern dietary trends and needs. Furthermore, a Social Return on Investment (SROI) study has shown that for every 1 euro invested, 4 euros are returned in social value, highlighting the initiative’s substantial contribution to society.
The initiative is implemented in both Greece and Cyprus, with its core activities centered at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, where CTY Greece is based. This is where the summer programs, specialized courses, and interactive activities—such as the "Genetics Escape Room"—take place. In this particular event, Lidl Hellas representatives and journalists experienced firsthand the educational journey of the students.
For the 11th consecutive year, Lidl Hellas remains a major donor of the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Greece at Anatolia College.
CTY offers students from across Greece, Cyprus, and around the world the opportunity to cultivate their potential through specially designed extracurricular programs that address their unique learning and cognitive needs.
Since 2014, Lidl Hellas has awarded more than 520 scholarships.
