Objective Action

Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is a strategic mobility plan for the next 10 to 15 years. The Plan aims to change the priorities of the private car and to organize projects, measures and actions, in order to promote walking, cycling, public transport, common mobility options, etc.

 

Target Audience

The citizens and visitors of the Municipality of Heraklion.

 

Duration

April 2020 to July 2021.


Description

Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is a strategic mobility plan for the next 10 to 15 years. The Plan aims to change the priorities of the private car and to organize projects, measures and actions, in order to promote walking, cycling, public transport, common mobility options, etc.


Heraklion aims to become a city where the car will not be the only mode of transport, but on the contrary, each means of transport will have the space and role it deserves, forming a functional urban network.

Impact on Society

The 1st public consultation session of the stakeholders was attended by more than 20 stakeholders.
Number of questionnaires answered by interested parties; 10
Number of questionnaires answered by citizens. 1,750

In the 2nd public consultation meeting of the stakeholders for the selection of the best SVAK scenario, there were more than 25 stakeholders.

More than 10 stakeholders proposed the radical scenario for the implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.



Initiative Location

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of the Municipality of Heraklion, refers to the total urban area of the city of Heraklion with about 180,000 inhabitants.

Benefits for Οrganization

Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan goal is to change the current distribution of modes of transport and reduce car use by 10% and motorcycle use by 10%, as well as increase walking / cycling and public transport by 12% and 8% respectively.

Other benefits include reduced road accidents, noise and air pollution and an overall upgrade of public health and the attractiveness of public spaces.
