Objective Action

Municipality of Agii Anargiri-Kamatero, consistent with its strategic choices and goal of adaptation to climate change, set as a priority the energy upgrade of Municipal Lighting. As the largest percentage (over 50%) of electricity consumption in the city comes from the street lighting network, energy saving is becoming an urgent need, both in terms of the proper use of resources as well as the promotion of energy efficiency.

Target Audience

  • Citizens
  • Visitors
  • Private companies
  • Public authorities

Duration

The implementation of the investment lasted 1 year.

Description

Municipality of AAK designed, auctioned and completed an innovative program for the replacement of energy-intensive lighting in the road network of the city. The investment consisted of the energy upgrade of lighting points of the city, and specifically, the supply, installation and maintenance of 7,050 new technology (LED) luminaires.
The annual energy consumption of the existing system amounts to 6,406,979.59 kWh, while the corresponding of the new system to 1,496,789.72 kWh. Based on the above, an initial savings estimate of approximately 77% is obtained. The carbon dioxide footprint will be reduced by 4,798.94 tons of CO2 per year while the savings amount to 224,518.46 euros per year, as maintenance costs are reduced due to the longer life of LED luminaires.

The methodology that was followed was the detailed recording of the Electricity data of the Common areas for the whole geographical area and their representation on a digital map, the collection and analysis of the electricity consumption data of the existing street lighting systems of the Municipality, as well as the collection and analysis of the data of operation and maintenance costs borne by the Municipality for the operation and maintenance of the Electricity lighting system of Common areas.

Based on the above data, the Municipality proceeded as follows:

1. installation of new lighting fixtures with new LED technology fixtures for the improvement and upgrading of the lighting level of the Municipality,

2. improvement of their maintenance planning, through the function "Remote Control System - Remote Control and Energy Control" (SLMS), in the Electricity Lighting System of Common Areas (Street Lighting).

Impact on Society

The benefits that arise for citizens from the energy upgrade of street lighting are the following:

  • LED luminaires emit stronger and clearer light. Any damage-problem in the street lighting is repaired in a period of not more than 72 hours, with the help of the remote control system that has been installed, so that the urban daily life is not affected.
  • Reduction of accidents overnight due to better lighting efficiency - studies by international institutes have shown that older conventional luminaires with overheating (yellow) lighting cause drowsiness in drivers. The daylight provided by the new technology luminaires and LED lamps awakens the eye of the observer (driver) thus improving their perception.
  • Reduction of crime and the feeling of fear of the citizens due to the aesthetic and quality upgrade of the lighting effect and the color of light (daylight) emitted by the LED light emitting diodes. Based on international studies, it has been proven worldwide that the quantitative and qualitative upgrade of lighting is a deterrent to the occurrence of criminal acts and violence in public places.

Benefits for Οrganization

Human resources (electricians) are released but also large financial resources to cover other needs of the Citizen, since the Municipality will not maintain the lighting, will not maintain a basket vehicle for street lighting needs, will not purchase consumables (lighting, bulbs, fuses, etc.).

With the use of modern LED luminaires, the Municipality will have the opportunity in the future to develop and offer Smart City applications (Parking Control, Waste Management, Station Management and more).

These large-scale urban actions utilizing innovative and environmentally friendly technologies are always in full compliance with the Community Directives and significantly improve the lives of residents and entrepreneurs.
