Continuous. The current 3-year program is close to completion.
TNT is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment where people can work safely and happily. The Organization has developed and implemented a documented Integrated Management System which includes provisions for service quality management (ISO 9001), environmental management (ISO 14001), occupational health and safety management (OHSAS 18001) and road traffic safety management in compliance with the requirements of the ISO 39001 international standard.
In this context, we manage health and safety, through a systemic approach. All our operating plants are required to obtain and maintain external certification, OHSAS 18001 being the minimum requirement, in addition to national and local regulatory standards. The health and safety risks related to our operating activities are identified and assessed, and are subsequently managed and controlled to acceptable levels by implementing effective risk controls in the context of business operations. Each function in the company applies a documented risk assessment process. We monitor our performance through a set of performance measurements. The key performance indicator (KPI) for safety is lost time accident (LTA). The annual objectives aim at / lead to improved performance. TNT’s health and safety performance is included in performance management and is subject to quarterly reviews.
Furthermore, we recognize the importance of in Health & Safety performance across the full extent of our operations, a significant part of which is carried out by subcontractors. Where possible, the subcontractors participate in improvement initiatives and educational programs.
To this effect we designed a three-year project which aims to enhance our safety culture and improve lost time accident (LTA) ratio by 50%.
We have developed several behavioral tools regarding security and we apply best practice techniques, including extensive training and guidance, promoting safety culture.
• In November 2013, TNT was the first company in Europe to be ISO 39001:2012 certified for road traffic safety.
• We began our journey in business excellence in 2005 with the acquisition of OHSAS 18001 certification for OHS.
• In February 2014 we partnered with Fleet Forum, an association recognized by the United Nations for its specialization in Road Safety and Carbon Dioxide Management, as well as with other NGOs.
• In July 2015 we created a corporate video for Safe Driving that stresses safety practices, which was used for training of our drivers. We wish to ensure that drivers of our own fleet as well as subcontractors and their staff are informed of safety and protection and are given the right advice, so as to be fully aware of the company's expectations in case of accidents or undesirable events.
• In 2015, we started using a new global reporting system called IMS (Incident Management System) which provides greater transparency and visibility into Health & Safety incidents and facilitates informed decision making.
The new system allows for online reporting on health and safety incidents as well as their main causes. It enhances the quality of data analysis by showing the trends in main causes of accidents while allowing their effective prevention, which eventually results in fewer accidents.
