Objective Action

Our goal is to set the standards in express transportation and contribute to a greener, safer and economically prosperous world.

Specifically, our goals are to improve fuel efficiency by 7%, to employ best & most reliable technology vehicles available by developing a supporting plan for TNT vehicles replacement and to formalize subcontractor standards on road environmental impact.

Target Audience

The company’s range of vehicle usage delivery and pick-up fleet (own and subcontracted), linehaul subcontractors, sales force fleet and management fleet.

Duration

October 2013 – October 2016.

Description

We are convinced that there is direct relation between safe drive and eco drive and are both related to driver behaviour / attitude. In addition, there is a direct relation between reduction of environmental impact and cost saving. The reduction of emission can result to improved driver behavior, improved vehicle maintenance, less driving or use of more efficient vehicles. In all cases the outcome is less use of fuel or other energy sources. That is a direct cost saving.

Measuring and reducing the environmental impacts of our activities is critical to maintain and improve our social license to operate and our customer value proposition. TNT Express has accepted and anticipated its responsibilities in respect to climate change and we are focusing our efforts to deliver innovative low emission supply chain solutions to our customers and continuously reduce our footprint through coordinated country carbon reduction plans.

Road transport is one of the major causes of the environmental pollution. According to a recent study, it is responsible for about 30% on the total emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. By reducing vehicle emissions that make up much of this world’s air pollution, by avoiding the practice of discharging used vehicle fluids into the environment and by recognising their social responsibility to mitigate physical and social damage caused by transportation, we can make our own specific contribution to improved quality of life.

TNT in collaboration with “Fleet Forum” developed an Environmental and Road Safety Impact Programme that assess and support TNT in order to develop an action plan and implement the right interventions to meet the objectives. By lessening the negative impact of transport through more efficient combustion, alternative fuels, and better vehicle management, the Organisation becomes environmentally responsible and the communities benefit.

The Programme is specifically developed through wise procurement of fuel-efficient vehicles, a proper maintenance schedule, drivers training and consolidation of deliveries. A very significant impact can be made on reducing environmental damage while at the same time improving transport efficiency.

Not only can vehicles be “healthier,” but employees can too. By developing safer, wider operational practices, our Organisation can benefit the wider physical and social environments. Respect for the communities they pass through can be taught to drivers and environmentally-damaging practices can be reduced. A well-maintained, more efficient engine is less polluting and drivers can be taught how to better maintain their vehicles.

Impact on Society

Through the Environmental and Road Safety Impact Programme and the specific actions that were implemented TNT contributes to environment protection and the improvement of the environmental and societal characteristics of the societies in which it operates.

The TNT PUD Fleet of Greece has managed to reduce the CO2 emissions by more than 20 tonnes every year since 2013.

Additionally, there was:

  • 7.15% improvement in fuel efficiency, thus 7,267 less liters used
  • 65% decrease of overspeedings with an improvement every month
  • All vehicles are less than 5yr old
  • Standards on road environmental impact for subcontractors were formalised
  • +9.8% improvement of drivers behavior, thus by 7.63 point in the Mobileye scoring scale where 100 is the top score
  • 63% improvement of road traffic accidents.

Initiative Location

All over Greece.

Working with Organization

“Fleet Forum”, an Organisation that offers tools and solutions to develop “green fleets” that have a reduced impact on the environment in terms of vehicle emissions and by-product pollution. It’s been TNT’s strategic partner for the last 10 years.

Workers Participation

Three teams were assembled consisting of PUD drivers, Sales personnel (with company car), management personnel and linehaul subcontractors.

Benefits for Οrganization

TNT implements a major environmental programme that has a positive impact not only to the stakeholders in general (local societies, employees and subcontractors) but also for the Company itself.

The improvement in fuel efficiency has led to 9,810€ savings in fuel consumption.

Also, by constantly training the drivers on how to drive safely and eco-friendly and by trying to employing the best and most reliable technology available, we maintain “healthier” vehicles for longer.

Via our environmental methods, we have managed to provide innovative low emission delivery solutions; thus keeping our customers satisfied.
