Objective Action

KPMG Greece is one of 34 countries participating since 2010 in the Global Green Initiative (GGI) by KPMG International. The GGI provides us with a tool to:
collect,
measure,
report, and subsequently monitor our greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact, in our effort to reduce them further.

In conjunction with the GGI we have customized our internal ERP system in order to accommodate appropriate data entry for the monitoring of our gas emissions. Everybody in KPMG is responsible for registering their business travel into the system. Following this, our internal team processes and consolidates the local data by incorporating it into specific global collection forms. The data collected on an annual basis are:

• Energy (heating/cooling).
• Car travel.
• Rail travel.
• Air travel.
• Water consumption.
• Paper procurement.
• Paper recycling, batteries, toners etc.
• FTE’s, floor-space, vehicle types.

Target Audience

Our employees -for them to be better aware of our efforts– and for our clients as a way to communicate to them our efforts for a better environment.

Description

We adopt green technology in our business environment where possible, and in various ways. Below is a list of such initiatives to date:

Paper:
1. We have activated “follow me printing;“ this enables users to pick their print outs from any machine located in the building with the swipe of their firm identification cards. This ensures that no uncontrollable and non-collected printing takes place. More importantly, if the printout is not collected within 24 hours, the print order is cancelled (i.e. no physical documented is printed).
2. We have stopped sending paper holiday cards; instead we send electronic Christmas cards to our contacts’ data base for the past 6 years (our client data base is 45,000 people strong).
3. We recycle paper on a monthly basis.
4. We participate in the annual campaign run by KPMG Poland called "No Printing Day", where printers and copiers are turned off for the day. By the end of the day, we record how much paper we would have printed and is now saved and thus "plant" a virtual tree.

We also recycle: batteries, light bulbs, and toners, and are in the process of introducing the recycling of plastic and aluminum.

We reduce our carbon footprint in different ways:
1. By encouraging our people to use public transport,
2. By encouraging our employees to share modes of other transportation when travelling in the same direction.
3. By attending meetings via teleconferencing or via their computer (Skype, Lync etc.).

Further actions:
1. Allow our people to work from home where possible.
2. No use/offer bottled water during our meetings (we use tap water).

We are also active in other ways, such as:
1. We participate in actions organized by other associations (i.e. tree planting).
2. We run information campaigns for our people concerning the "green living" and encourage them participate in the Earth Hour.

Working with Organization

We do not have permanent cooperation with any organization outside the company; we liaise with organizations on an ad hoc basis and based on the initiative planned. We are, however, members of Global Sustain, a forum on sustainability.

Workers Participation

The majority of our employees participate.

Benefits for Οrganization

The benefits for the company are evident above, as with lesser consumption we also enjoy the economic benefits. More importantly though, we enjoy our people’s satisfaction in working with a company that cares. This is evident in our People’s Satisfaction Survey which is run every 2 years and where we enjoy high satisfaction rates to the tune of over 80%.
