Corporate Social Responsibility is gaining momentum in Greece in the past years. In KPMG, we have formulated a plan to establish and promote certain ethical principles in respect of our people and the environment we work in. In KPMG Greece we align our actions and strategy to the Global strategy and wish to put our mark via our contribution. Specifically, we aim to:
• Minimize our environmental impact.
• Ensure that our employees are motivated and involved in all relevant actions aiming towards the improvement of our social profile.
• Encourage our suppliers and other relevant parties to share our commitment.
• Involve the community in which we work in and the society as a whole.
Our social actions include a wide range of activities, such as donations, sponsorships, voluntary work etc. All our actions are closely knit with our values as a Firm and our philosophy is set on three axes:
- Our goal is to have an impact in the communities we work in, to our people by making them proud to work for a socially responsible company and help groups of people at different stages of their lives.
- We aim to help and alleviate stress from the most vulnerable of ages; troubled children, to help shaping our youth and our people.
- For the elder generation, caring for them and not forget them.
Our people, our clients, our suppliers, the community.
Ongoing
Over the past couple of years we have built up our responsible citizen profile adding new actions to old cherished initiatives, some of which were born from our values. We wanted to take this up a step and be consistently active throughout the year. We have thought of several ways to participate as a Firm in various Corporate Responsibility programs and have put plans to paper. We have a calendar of the actions that we have put together, where we dedicate every month either to CSR, our Values or our Culture@KPMG and invite all employees to join us in our actions. At the beginning of each month, our team sends an email introducing and explaining our CSR action for the month.
Our major initiatives include:
• PERAMA: We support an impoverished community with the help of their local Church in Perama, by providing them with food, personal care items and clothing on an annual basis. This initiative started 9 years ago and at that time, we provided staple food for approximately 70 families; now they have reached 120. We supply them with food provisions, like rice, pasta, oil, tomato paste, flour, beans, lentils, condensed milk and potatoes. We provide body care materials like toothpaste, soap and shampoo and clothing for all ages. In addition, we buy Christmas and Easter gifts to the 45 children of the community. With our people’s contributions, we have managed to collect 2 tons and 794 kilos of food in the past year alone. This translates to money contributions that amount EUR 6,160. Since the beginning 2005, we have purchased a total of 22 tons and 152 kilos of food. This means that our people have kindly contributed a total amount of EUR 48,520! In terms of hours dedicated to the collection and distribution of the above needings, we have invested a total of 1,091 hours over the years.
• ELEPAP: Loyal to our commitment to children, we have been supporting ELEPAP in the past years in various ways. ELEPAP is a rehabilitation center that supports the development of children with physical disabilities and developmental difficulties and at the same time provides support to their families. We have been providing audit services on a pro bono basis for a number of years. For the past 4 years however, we are providing them with a different service, by offering them the knowledge and expertise that comes via the presence of one of our senior management member in ELEPAP’ BoD. Our support though does not stop here. We also:
a) Participate in the Annual Athens Classic marathon every year and run under the colors of ELEPAP to support their efforts to protect and support children with disabilities. The number of our participants-runners increase every year, and this year (2014) we had 75 people running.
b) Prepare/produce for the past 2 years a sizable number of Christmas “Good luck charms” for ELEPAP to sell at their Christmas Bazaar. With the contribution of 15-20 volunteers we have prepared around 200-300 charms; the proceeds from their sale going in support of their cause.
• BLOOD DONATION: In cooperation with the Red Cross hospital, we have set up a corporate blood bank and hold two blood donations per year, for the past 9 years. We have collected to date 359 bottles of blood, available when needed to help our employees and their families.
• RECYCLING/PAPER CONSUMPTION:
- We have activated “follow me printing", this enables users to pick their print outs from any printer/copier machine located in the building with the swipe of their firm identification cards. This ensures that no uncontrollable and non-collected printing takes place. More importantly, if the printout is not collected within 24 hours, the print order is cancelled (i.e. no physical documented is printed).
- We have stopped sending paper holiday cards; instead we send electronic Christmas cards to our contacts’ data base for the past 6 years (our client data base is 45,000 people strong).
- We recycle paper on a monthly basis.
- We participate in the annual campaign run by KPMG Poland called "No Printing Day", where printers and copiers are turned off for the day. By the end of the day we record how much paper we would have printed and is now saved and thus "plant" a virtual tree.
• RECYCLING OF OTHER ITEMS: We also recycle, batteries, light bulbs, and toners and we are in process of introducing the recycling of plastic and aluminum as well. To date we have recycled:
- Paper: 45 tons and 890kg of paper.
- Batteries: 39kg.
- Lamps and Toners: 165kg of lamps and 280 toners.
• THE Culture@KPMG CONCEPT: In addition, we have introduced the concept of Culture@KPMG, whereby we organize visits to museums, exhibitions or take guided walks around the city. This is part of our commitment to our people, where by under the general umbrella of culture, we get to know the city we live in, or be introduced to the work of geniuses, while strengthening the ties between our people and their families under a relaxed and informal environment.
• OTHER ACTIVITIES: We provided stationary material to the NGO "SOS Children's Villages" to the amount of 3,410 items and liaised with our local social pharmacy where we donated a series of pharmaceutical items. Lastly, we have introduced the running of a series of training courses. The first was on the provision of First Aid.
Our results were reported in previous sections but we would like to emphasize that we contribute in the communities that need our attention, we provide our experience to organizations that need it and make an impact towards a sustainable future for us and our people. More importantly though, we enjoy our people’s satisfaction in working with a company that cares. This is evident in our People’s Satisfaction Survey which is run every 2 years and where we enjoy high satisfaction rates to the tune of over 80%.

Increasing. In the past years, we have observed a small increase in the number of people who participate in our initiatives. The more we do, the more their appetite grow and we have requests for more activities.
