Description

After the devastating fire of 2007, the NGO ELIX activated to restore the landscape in Ancient Olympia. In partnership with the local government, the archaeological department, the Forest Service and the local environmental and cultural Association, drew up an action plan for:

• The removal of burnt claret and logs.
• The specific planting hill belonging to the archaeological service.
• Installing irrigation system clipboard.
• The construction of access paths and terraces on the hill, among the plants.
• The annual monitoring of maintenance and improvement of tree planting in cooperation with volunteers from 2007 to date.

Impact on Society

• On the particular hill, more than 5,000 plants have been planted and maintened, as well as, ensured their survival through their weeding and watering.
• Ambulant tourism has been developed by foreigners who visit Olympia.
• The local community, residents, schoolchildren, etc. have been sensitized and raised their awareness.
• More than 250 people from Greece and abroad have worked on this project.
