Reforestation and Maintenance Little Trees in Ancient Olympia

Restoration of burnt areas in the hills around the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia.

From September 2007 to Spring 2013

After the devastating fire of 2007, the NGO ELIX activated to restore the landscape in Ancient Olympia. In partnership with the local government, the archaeological department, the Forest Service and the local environmental and cultural Association, drew up an action plan for:

• The removal of burnt claret and logs.
• The specific planting hill belonging to the archaeological service.
• Installing irrigation system clipboard.
• The construction of access paths and terraces on the hill, among the plants.
• The annual monitoring of maintenance and improvement of tree planting in cooperation with volunteers from 2007 to date.

Local Environmental and Cultural Association of Ancient Olympia, Local Authorities, Forestry, Z' tax office of Classical Antiquities, the Alliance of Voluntary Service Organizations.

4 people from the permanent staff of ELIX, seasonal moderators and team leaders, local craftsmen.

Ancient Olympia

• On the particular hill, more than 5,000 plants have been planted and maintened, as well as, ensured their survival through their weeding and watering.
• Ambulant tourism has been developed by foreigners who visit Olympia.
• The local community, residents, schoolchildren, etc. have been sensitized and raised their awareness.
• More than 250 people from Greece and abroad have worked on this project.

As the NGO ELIX is a nonprofit organization ensures its viability through its organized actions. This project gave ELIX the opportunity to develop an important activity, ensuring the resources needed to continue its function, as well as, valuable working experience for the volunteers who constitute ELIX' s target audience.
