Objective Action

LAMDA Development committed and took responsibility for the first building to be constructed in The Ellinikon to become the new home of our vulnerable citizens. The building was handed over to the public in September 2023. It is a building that will house 4 associations of disabled people (Amymoni, Ermis, NIKI-Victor Artant and SAMSKP), which until today were housed in 1970s buildings at the old facilities of the American base. The makeshift and inadequate for the needs of their residents facilities of only 2,500 sq.m. are replaced by a building complex with a total construction of 11,500 sq.m., which is a model for Social Care facilities in the whole of Europe.

Target Audience

The building will house 4 associations of people with disabilities (Amymoni, Hermes, NIKI-Victor Artant and Samskp) and will accommodate more than 300 people with disabilities.

Duration

Construction on the project began in spring 2022 and was completed in September 2023.

Description

Lamda Development considers it self-evident that businesses, as an integral part of society, must adopt responsible business behaviour, applying practices that are rewarding to society as a whole. Based on the above premise, the Company has adopted a set of initiatives aimed at: social and economic well-being and the support of weaker social groups. At the same time, the company is firmly committed to implementing strategies and practices that meet the needs of society as a whole and create value for society and the market. This commitment is also reflected in The Ellinikon project. LAMDA's aim, from the moment it undertook the urban regeneration project, was to ensure the inclusion of vulnerable social groups in a model new city that would be open and accessible to all. The Ellinikon will be characterised by diversity by creating a public infrastructure open to all residents. Thus, the investment was studied, designed and created with special provisions for people with disabilities. It is worth noting that LAMDA adheres to its ethical commitments regarding the protection of human rights throughout its business activities. In this context, the first building of The Ellinikon is linked to human values and the culture of everyday life. It is a model building for how modern structures should be constructed to support the needs of our fellow citizens with disabilities.

Impact on Society

The Center for the Care of Persons with Disabilities, which was built in the context of the major urban regeneration project of The Ellinikon, has great symbolic as well as substantial value. Its creation aims to upgrade everyday life and create a new way of life, easier, more functional and extroverted for both children and adults who need, but are also entitled to, optimal care. With a unique surrounding area, the building stands out for its "green" and sustainable design, with the aim of improving the daily life of both children and adults with disabilities. From the beginning, the main concern of the study and the guiding principle during the design of the building was not only the provision of functionally suitable spaces, but also the creation of a pleasant and bright environment that will provide a sense of safety, security and ease of orientation. The important function of the educational garden stands out, which strengthens the bioclimatic character of the building and aims to develop children's skills. The design of the building also included the planting of 142 new evergreen and deciduous trees that will significantly contribute to carbon dioxide sequestration. In fact, a total of approximately 12,000 plants, trees, shrubs and flowering species of the Mediterranean flora will be planted, constituting an important supporting tool for the therapeutic path followed for people with disabilities. Finally, it is worth noting that the PWD building is expected to receive within 2023 the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold level international sustainable development certification.

Benefits for Οrganization

The financing of the €15 million project was covered exclusively by LAMDA as it is part of the company's social contribution and strategic corporate social responsibility. In this context, the design of the PWD building is in line with the wider planning of LAMDA Development for The Ellinikon development with specifications for disabled people. By implementing these CSR initiatives, Lamda Development offers strong moral incentives to its employees and all stakeholders associated with the company, ensuring increased productivity and enhancing its corporate image. At the same time, strong ties are created with the State and society, which is supported by the company's actions.
