FAIRLIFE LUNG CANCER CARE

Objective Action

FairLife Lung Cancer Care, the only non-profit social organization in Greece, exclusively dedicated to lung cancer (LC), advocates a Fair Life through a patient-centered and holistic approach to the disease. FairLife L.C.C.'s activities focus on reliable information, education, counseling and psychosocial support. The strong link between LC, smoking, the environment and air pollution calls for information and awareness-raising campaigns to protect the planet and its biodiversity. LC prevalence could be decreased within a healthy environment, reduced gas emissions, zero carbon footprint products, waste management, cost-effective recycling, regenerative and blue economy.  FairLife L.C.C. works to promote Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility issues towards a Sustainable Society, based on environmental sensitivity and social inclusion. This has been, along with anti-smoking campaigns, the core objectives of our initiatives.

Through information and education, we aim to foster innovative practices to promote the right behavioral patterns and encourage the future generation to take action for a major global shift.

FairLife L.C.C.'s initiatives include anti-smoking and environmental actions, student creativity competitions, educational programs, collaborations with schools and municipalities, organization of sports and wellness events with environmental aspects.

Target Audience

The initiative, as summarized above, is aimed at young people (students of all educational levels) and also indirectly at parents, teachers and the wider public. FairLife L.C.C. wishes to raise young people's awareness of the smoking impact and the need to protect the environment and promote sustainability. The aim is to encourage an open discussion between young people - smokers or non-smokers - and parents. Studies have shown that parental smoking is closely linked to the adoption of the habit and broadly to the behavioral pattern of smoking. Young students could thus act positively within the family and society, raising health and environmental issues and practices. Education on green transition should be delivered to young learners, the new generation.

Duration

The initiative was launched as of May 2021 and is currently in progress.

Description

FairLife L.C.C.'s youth initiatives on health and the environment have been implemented over the last three years (2021-23) under the auspice of the European Year of Youth 2022.

Innovative aspects:

-  Developed by young people for young people to promote engaged citizenship and develop skills, attitudes and opinions.

- Based on a holistic approach, designed to give young people a new role in the family, school and society, in order to build "the first tobacco/ lung cancer free generation".

-  Establishing a structured plan to motivate, network and initiate actions by individuals, institutions, schools, organizations, municipalities, etc. Networking is promoted through FairLife L.C.C.'s youth blog, national student and youth creative writing and poster competitions, collaborations with schools, organizations and municipalities.  Concept and planning of the majority of initiatives were carried out by the youngest Brand Ambassador Orestis Mikelakis and the team of FairLife L.C.C.'s young volunteers. The actions were implemented in collaboration with schools, educational institutions, students and municipalities (Trikala, Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni), which supported youth actions.

- Fostering a new environmental culture of knowledge, skills, values and attitudes. The concept of sustainability as part of the educational process and health awareness shapes young people into responsible and active citizens.

Youth actions on health and the environment include:

YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS

1.1. Information and awareness-raising short informational broadcasts on LC ("14 minutes of life"), health and the environment (Inhale…Exhale….? OR BREATHE?)

1.3 Youth Blog. FairLife L.C.C. volunteers have created the Youth Blog, a Think Tank in which young people highlight the health value of our common lung, the environment, through painting, creative writing, journalism and scientific research. The youth blog also posts school activities implemented under the supervision of FairLife L.C.C., studies carried out by students, etc.  The volunteers' initiative to interview scientists of various disciplines about smoking and health issues is quite remarkable. A similar action is being carried out on environmental protection and cigarettes.

1.4 Video for World Lung Day and World Environmental Health Day 2023:  FairLife L.C.C. welcomes new ambassador Antonis Tsapatakis, Paralympic swimming champion to raise awareness for the environment and lungs’ health, The video also features mountaineer and FairLife L.C.C.’s ambassador Kiki Tsakaldimi and high school student, Eric Bell as the voice of the new generation. Benefits for Οrganization

The Youth Environmental and Health Awareness Initiatives  promoted interaction with the young generation within FairLife L.C.C.'s mission against LC and in favour of health protection.

Communication with students, parents and teachers provided valuable insights into children and family views on smoking, health and environmental issues. This knowledge is  being processed by FairLife L.C.C. and serves as a guide for future awareness-raising and information activities in Greece.

Environmental actions and the hosting of sports and wellness events  allowed collaborations with local authorities, municipalities and communities throughout the country.

FairLife L.C.C. has acquired ambassadors, representing the young generation and the field of sports, who serve as role models and continue to spread the message of  LC prevention nationwide.

The promotion of sustainable development and social responsibility issues has revealed the vicious circle of LC, environmental pollution and smoking habit, broadened FairLife L.C.C.'s target audience and laid the foundations for larger-scale actions.
