The Governor of South Aegean Region, Mr. George Hatzimarkos, at a meeting held with a delegation from the Regional Government of Valencia, launched the relocation and integration in the Valencia local community of at least 1,000 refugees from the South Aegean islands.
The meeting was sealed with a Memorandum of Understanding, signed between the South Aegean Regional Governor, Mr. George Hatzimarkos, and the Vice President of the Regional Government of Valencia, Mrs. Mónica Oltra Jarque.
This is a particularly important initiative of the two Regions, not only for substantive reasons, but also because of the strong symbolism and the messages it sends regarding the management of the refugee problem in the Europe of the Enlightenment and the humanist values.
The agreement between the two Regions is to be approved by the governments of both countries, in order to pass to the implementation stage.
The regional delegation of Valencia visited Leros Island, at the invitation of the Region of South Aegean, to see firsthand the situation that has developed on the island due to the constant migration flows and to discuss all the details for the transfer of refugees to Spain.
As agreed, the Regional Government of Valencia will launch a ship of a capacity of 1,000 people, which will transport refugees from the South Aegean islands for relocation to Spain in order to integrate them into the local community, while the relocation of 1,000 additional refugees is being planned.
