Description

This initiative aims to deal with coastal pollution, through actions to clean the beaches, the separate collection of the various streams of waste produced mainly by bathers and visitors to the beaches, as well as raising public awareness of the need protection of the coasts and the sea. At the same time, through the recycling of the materials that will be collected, it aims to implement the principles of the Circular Economy.

The actions at "Marikes" beach included:

  • Placement of separate waste collection bins on the beach. A sufficient number of sets of bins were placed on the beach to cover the needs of the beach, the smooth implementation of the project and the sorting process at the source.
  • Placement of information signs at its access points
  • Daily meticulous manual cleaning of the beach in morning and afternoon shifts so that the cleanliness of the beach is ensured during all hours of beach use by bathers
  • Provision of special beach ashtrays for bathers
  • Daily quantitative and qualitative recording of waste collected from the beach during manual cleaning
  • Sampling quality composition of manual cleaning waste to ensure accuracy of records
  • Informing bathers who were interested in the goals and actions of the project
  • Separate collection of waste produced on the beach by bathers
  • Record the quantities of the different waste streams collected on a daily basis in the bins
  • Transport 2 times a week to the KDAU koropio of the collected recyclable waste streams

The environmental footprint of the action was recorded in a special report and the quantitative data collected was submitted to the Ministry of the Environment and the EU's Marine Litter Watch application.

  • Citizen awareness
  • The Company's commitment to the principles of sustainability and its contribution to the development of the circular economy.
  • Carbon benefit resulting from the recycling of the waste collected in the beach separate collection bins (The difference between the Greenhouse Gas emissions (expressed in equivalent units of carbon dioxide – CO2e) resulting from the recycling of the waste and the emissions resulting from the primary production of the corresponding materials, gives the carbon benefit)
  • Benefit to the biodiversity of the area, having removed from the coastal and marine environment, materials which could have particularly adverse effects on the marine organisms of the area.
