At the same time, it focuses its activity with systematic actions and measurable results, on energy efficiency, on waste management based on the reduce-reuse-recycle principle and on the use and promotion of environmentally friendly products and services that contribute to the development of a competitive low-energy economy consumption. Vodafone promotes the principles of Sustainable Development in its supply chain as well by developing technologies for its customers that enhance the competitiveness of businesses thus multiplying the benefits of its actions. Also, for the proper management of the programs, it implements Environmental and Energy Management Systems, which are certified according to ISO 14001 & ISO 50001 standards for all the company's activities and facilities.
Vodafone Giga Green Network
With the aim of fulfilling the Group's vision, Vodafone Greece presented the Vodafone Green Giga Network, the green network which operates from 100% certified renewable energy sources, and is the first network to be developed in a sustainable way. Vodafone Greece already covers 100% of its needs from green energy sources, certified through guarantees of origin, in the core network, in all MTXs, the company's data centers, mobile and fixed networks, privately owned retail outlets and buildings company offices, even where it does not directly control the supply of electricity to the grid. In addition, programs are being implemented that significantly reduce the energy consumed in the telecommunications network and in the Company's office buildings.
At the same time, the company is taking further steps to reduce the impact of its operation, having set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2025 by reusing, reselling or recycling 100% of its surplus network equipment. For the financial year 2020-2021, from the energy saving programs and the supply of energy from 100% certified RES, 157440 tons of CO2e were prevented.
Vodafone Group's goal is, through its technologies, to contribute to improving the lives of one billion people and to zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from its operations by 2030 and, throughout the company's value chain by in 2040.
The green network of Ammouliani
Vodafone Greece implemented an important project, providing green energy to the island of Ammouliani, Halkidiki, with actions that will allow the island's basic infrastructure to operate exclusively through solar energy.
In particular, Vodafone has installed photovoltaic systems at the Ammouliani Kindergarten, which will serve its electrical energy needs and contribute to significant energy savings estimated at 25,000 kWh annually.
In addition, for the production needs of the commercial for Vodafone's actions in Ammouliani, best environmental practices were applied for the first time on a shoot in Greece in all areas of production, from transportation and nutrition, to energy consumption and waste management, achieving the creation of the first "Zero Waste" shoot, reducing drinking water consumption by 60%, and preventing at least 1.5 tons of CO2e equivalent emissions while the shooting's electricity consumption was covered by 100% certified RES.
The largest green fleet
At the same time, Vodafone, implementing its integrated strategy for a "green" transition, created a large "green" corporate vehicle fleet and perhaps the largest electric charging network in the corporate environment of Greece.
In particular, recently the company proceeded to completely replace the conventional fleet of vehicles, a force of almost 500 vehicles that it had and replaced it with hybrid - plug-in technology cars with the possibility of using an electric motor or purely electric, utilizing the use of electricity for their movement.
The environmental benefit of this change is significant, as it ensures a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of up to 40% compared to the use of the previous fleet of cars and is practical proof of Vodafone's commitment to the green transition.
In addition, Vodafone designed, built and put into operation the largest corporate electric vehicle charging network in Greece, with 75 chargers installed in the company's building facilities, providing the possibility of charging the entire fleet of electric corporate vehicles which it manages efficiently and flexibly through a special electronic platform.
Environmental benefits with IoT
Digital technologies are at the core of the green transition, as with the use of telematics and telemetry and the Internet of Things (IoT), it is possible to reduce the environmental impact of organizations and businesses, using advanced Vodafone services.
It is typical that by using the Vodafone Fleet Control service, which allows any company to manage its vehicles in a more efficient way, Vodafone customers, such as transport and logistics companies, achieve significant environmental savings and a reduction in operating costs up to by 20%, thanks to the interconnection of the car with sensors that measure fuel consumption, locate its geographical position, utilize optimal routing and even control the temperature of the load.
It is estimated that in the previous financial year (April 2020 – March 2021), thanks to such solutions used by customers of the Vodafone Group, it was possible to avoid releasing into the atmosphere more than 7.1 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
