The Region of Central Macedonia, through the Vice Region of Development and Environment, undertook an extensive and comprehensive action to clean the coastline and the marine zone of Thermaikos Gulf from waste. The company, as it is called "Clean Coasts, Clean Thermaikos", aimed at the restoration of the environment and the safe management of waste by utilizing the good practices of the circular economy.
In particular, cleaning operations were carried out on the coastal front of Kalochori - Axios, at the mouths of the Gallikos, Axios and Loudia rivers, as well as in the Alykes Kitros, the largest in extent and depth of the last decades. Using boats and in a large-scale operation, a total of 500 200 liter plastic drums were collected, 70 tons of plastic nets and 40 tons of worn tires were pulled from the seabed. The above waste was transferred to recycling units. Nets will be raw material for clothing, barrels raw material for fuel and new plastic items, and tires raw material for paving roads.
Obtaining benefits for the wider area of P.K.M., mainly the restoration of the environment and highlighting the high social value of the wetlands of the area and the Thermaic Gulf, which are protected by international treaties.

With the end of the cleaning, the P.K.M. continues to demarcate special points for the collection of shellfish waste, in order to prevent it from ending up in the sea.
