Objective Action

At ELLAKTOR Group, active contribution and meaningful promotion of sustainable development are placed at the core of its business planning and the activities across its sectors.

Beyond significant operational changes enhancing competitiveness in its activity sectors, the Group has developed a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening its footprint and contributing meaningfully to environmental issues and societal support, which are the main pillars of its corporate sustainability strategy.

The New Generation is the most crucial and promising part of society for a better future. The sports ideal is a deep source of inspiration, reflecting values such as collaboration, teamwork, effort, and progress, respect, ethics, meritocracy, mental and physical health, and excellence. This combination of values is the best expression of the Group's vision for the society of the coming years.

Through the sponsorship support of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE), the Group's contribution has expanded across the entire Greek territory, becoming more targeted and substantial, especially in regions that often require more support, particularly in sports infrastructure.

This sponsorship also aims to modernize operations and create a Model Federation, providing all athletes with equal opportunities and the necessary resources to train and achieve their dreams competitively. The Group supports all athletes with pride, hoping they continue to offer impressive sports performances and many emotional moments with their distinctions and achievements.

Target Audience

To the new generation, the broader and local community.

Description

The Group's goal, through the sponsorship of the Hellenic Swimming Federation, is to contribute to creating better conditions for all aquatic sports athletes, both in major urban centers with more flexible access to sports facilities and in rural areas where conditions are often more challenging and with fewer or no alternatives.

The Group's collaboration with the KOE provided the opportunity to offer safe and accessible facilities to 28,500 athletes of all ages and competitive levels and to 450 clubs throughout Greece, supporting athletes in local and international competitions and developing opportunities for young people to engage in sports, particularly aquatic sports, through KOE initiatives.

The growing social challenges faced by today's youth necessitate initiatives promoting sports values and creating healthy role models. Values and role models that will allow them to grow and mature within a framework of respect, goal dedication, personal effort, and fair competition. The ethos of KOE athletes is perhaps the most significant and hopeful message for all those who wish to contribute substantially to shaping a strong and worthy New Generation. Having made a unique journey in recent months, both in national and international events, KOE athletes have not only distinguished themselves but mainly achieved personal goals, perhaps the most important achievement and the strongest message for sports.

ELLAKTOR Group is proud that, through this sponsorship, it contributes to the promotion of athletes and creates the foundation and conditions for them to pursue their dreams and goals, from smaller events to major international competitions, such as the 2024.

Impact on Society

The aim of this initiative is to support the efforts of aquatic athletes and the important work of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) while highlighting the value and benefits of sports for the new generation. By contributing to the creation of suitable conditions, we enable our athletes to pursue their dreams and foster an environment where they can compete and thrive.

We feel particularly proud that with our support, aquatic sports recorded 119 global, European, and Balkan podium finishes just in 2023, unprecedented for Greek standards, while a total of 42 of our athletes have achieved Olympic qualification (PARIS 2024), in both individual and team events.

In detail, our support for the work of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) through our three-year sponsorship has resulted in the following outcomes:

  • Assignment and hosting of International Aquatic Sports Events in our country after almost twenty (20) years.
  • Upgrade of competitive events and major international events, such as the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2023 (Athens - OAKA), World Artistic Swimming Open OAKA, Mediterranean Swimming Cup 2023 (Larissa), Acropolis Swim Open 2023 (Athens - OAKA), and many others, with high international athlete and team participation and significant audience turnout.
  • Implementation of targeted interventions for improving competitive programs and event organization, with successful innovations in the 2022-2023 competitive season, enhancing time, space, and facility management with high-quality results.
  • The provision of modern, top-quality technical equipment for swimming competitions.
  • Formation of a scientific support team for top Greek athletes (SW & OWS) and their coaches, including PE professors, Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapists, Trainers, Nutritionists, and Sports Psychologists.
  • The formation, after many years, of a national "Junior" team in the sport of Open Water Swimming (OWS), achieving significant successes at the European level and demonstrating great potential for the future.
  • The consistent presence of physiotherapists at all training camps and major international events, as well as in the daily training preparation of top Greek swimmers in Athens and Thessaloniki.
  • A significant improvement in performance across all competitive age categories (ages 13 and up), from basic to elite levels. Notably, there has been a rapid advancement in performance among girls and women across nearly all categories, addressing a nearly two-decade decline, with few exceptions. If this rate of improvement among the younger generation of talented high-performance Greek athletes continues over the next two years, the number of international distinctions is expected to increase substantially.
  • The elevation of aquatic sports with international distinctions in top competitions held during the 2022-2023 season (including events previously postponed over the past two years due to the pandemic). Progress continued robustly across all competitive categories for women (ages 13 and up), both in terms of participation and high-level performance. There was remarkable improvement in long-distance events (400m, 800m, 1,500m), particularly at the elite level.
  • The expansion of scientific monitoring and support for athletes. Utilizing modern, specialized technological equipment acquired by the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) is a primary goal for the coming period, as it can play a crucial role in technical and training development at both elite and basic levels.
  • The establishment of a coach training program. During the 2022-2023 period, online educational presentations were conducted by esteemed coaches, generating significant interest and participation. Conducting training seminars for Greek coaches is a primary goal for the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) and a top priority for the coming period.
  • The enhancement of the role and experience of judges. The role of judges is deemed crucial for the successful conduct of competitions. Through the upgrade of swimming (SW) and open water swimming (OWS) events and the increasing number of high-level national and international competitions, the quality of judging has improved. Given past shortages of qualified judges in several cities hosting competitions, judge training programs have been implemented in most of these areas. This training will continue, along with a systematic program for the ongoing education and evaluation of judges.
  • The establishment of training camps and preparatory competitions for pre-national and national teams. A notable example was the summer camp in August 2023 in Heraklion, Crete, for members of the national swimming (SW) and open water swimming (OWS) teams. The camp was highly successful, as evidenced by its positive outcomes and its impact on fostering team spirit and national pride among athletes. Training camps for pre-national and junior national teams are instrumental in both athletic development and building strong bonds within the national teams, which is crucial for performance in major international events. Additionally, preparation camps were held for elite athletes with top foreign coaching teams, opening channels for communication and collaboration, a highly beneficial development for the country’s aquatic sports.
  • The formation of a pre-national and national swimming team at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (OAKA). For the past two years, a team of swimmers from the pre-national and national teams has been training under the guidance of federation coaches at a modern swimming training center at OAKA. A highlight has been the remarkable improvement of one national team swimmer, Stergios Bila, who achieved outstanding results at the 2023 European Swimming Championships (U23), winning two gold medals and securing his place in the 2024 Olympic Games.
  • Increased interest in the sport. There has been a notable rise in demand for children’s swimming lessons, reflected in a more than 30% increase in competitive activity in swimming compared to the previous year (2021-2022). Additionally, there was a substantial increase, around 20%, in the number of competitive swimmers.

These indicators are very encouraging for the future and growth prospects of aquatic sports in Greece. The efforts and initiatives undertaken to make these sports more appealing to young children and to highlight the benefits of aquatic sports for everyone appear to be yielding positive results.

The need to connect with school sports remains significant and is a critical factor for the development of sports in our country, a practice already implemented across most of Europe. The Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE), with the support of ELLAKTOR Group, has planned significant reforms, initiatives, and actions for 2024. These include the creation and implementation of a new comprehensive Development Program across all levels and stages of aquatic sports, aimed at further advancing the field.
