It offers integrated solutions in the field of waste management, undertaking the final legal disposal and their correct environmental utilization.

Target Audience

These works will contribute to the improvement of the infrastructure of the Botanic area and the upgrading of the standard of living of its inhabitants.

Duration

The duration of the project is one (1) year and is estimated to be completed, according to the contract, on March 2024.

Description

Record

In November 2013, during an emergency inspection by Environmental Inspectors, it was found that there was an uncontrolled disposal of solid waste in a fenced area owned by the Municipality of Athens, in Botanikos area, on which an excavation had been made in the past for the construction of the Panathinaikos stadium. Due to this disposal and the accumulation of combustible material (paper, rubble, etc.), at least fifteen (15) fires broke out, as a result of which the Athens Fire Service Administration issued a document, according to which there was a recommendation "... in order to avoid a new outbreak of fire, please secure the perimeter of the area and guard it so that access and deposition of waste are not possible".

The situation of the site resembled an Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Area within an urban area, and it was imperative that the decontamination of the site proceed immediately, with legal management of the deposited waste, both for reasons of protecting the natural environment and the public health, as well as for reasons of releasing the area.

The works carried out are:

• Identification and recording of waste

• Classification of waste into hazardous and non-hazardous

• Removal and collection of asbestos materials

• Hazardous waste collection and transport operations (aluminum slag with contaminated soils, creosote-impregnated wood, vehicle shredding waste, toner waste, etc.)
