The initiative aims at the substantial reduction of waste volumes destined for landfilling, through the conversion of hazardous and non-hazardous streams into alternative fuels and raw materials. By putting into practice the principles of circular economy and waste hierarchy, Antipollution seeks to promote energy recovery and material reuse, advancing a modern, environmentally responsible model of waste management.
Alignment with UN SDGs
- Sustainable Development Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Sustainable Development Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
- Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action
- Sustainable Development Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
The initiative is addressed to industrial and port facilities, public and local authorities responsible for waste management, as well as to relevant environmental regulatory bodies. It also concerns businesses and organizations active in the fields of circular economy, environmental management, and sustainable production, which are in search of technically sound and environmentally responsible waste management solutions.
Annual initiative – implemented continuously on a yearly basis.
Antipollution implements an integrated and innovative waste management practice, focusing on the production of alternative fuels and raw materials on a daily basis. This approach has led to a significant reduction in the quantities of waste sent to landfill through energy recovery processes. Specifically, the company receives and processes waste streams originating from port facilities, industrial units, and local authorities, with the goal of converting them into:
Waste reception, storage, and management take place at appropriately licensed and modern facilities, using state-of-the-art equipment and under the supervision of specialized and trained personnel. On-site chemical laboratories ensure continuous monitoring and quality control at all processing stages. All procedures comply with strict environmental and technical standards, guaranteeing high levels of safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Particular emphasis is placed on the proper and meaningful application of the waste hierarchy, as defined by European and national legislation. At the initial stage, incoming waste streams are sorted at Antipollution’s facilities to remove recyclable materials, which are then separated and forwarded for further recycling. Subsequently, the remaining waste is directed to appropriate processing lines, aiming either at producing alternative fuels (recovery), or at generating stabilized materials suitable for reuse. This distinction reflects a multi-layered approach and demonstrates the company’s commitment to minimizing landfill disposal and maximizing all possible forms of material utilization. Through this model, Antipollution puts into practice the core principles of the circular economy.
The implementation of the initiative in 2024 resulted in the recovery and utilization of 99.9% of the waste received, effectively preventing its disposal in landfills and significantly contributing to the reduction of environmental impact. The production of alternative fuels and alternative raw materials allowed their redirection to energy-intensive industries, substantially reinforcing the circular economy. At the same time, the company’s clients and local communities benefited from an environmentally sound and responsible waste management solution.
The initiative is implemented at Antipollution’s facilities, including the Waste Transfer Station (WTS) in Drapetsona, the non-hazardous waste management plant in Aspropyrgos, the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), the hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment plant in Ritsona, and the facility in Patras.
The implementation of this practice requires ongoing collaboration with a wide range of involved parties, including industrial facilities, port authorities, local and municipal bodies, as well as regulatory authorities. In parallel, Antipollution works closely with waste transporters and technical consultants to ensure the smooth operation of all stages of the waste management process.
The implementation of the procedures is based on the systematic involvement of Antipollution’s specialized personnel. The company’s employees possess the required technical expertise and experience in the collection, transport, storage, and management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, as well as in the correct and safe operation of mechanical equipment. Their active participation ensures the strict application of the prescribed safety protocols, full regulatory compliance, and uninterrupted operational continuity.
The implementation of this practice enhanced Antipollution’s operational capacity in the field of waste management, highlighting its ability to convert different waste streams into alternative fuels and raw materials. In this way, significant resource savings were achieved, along with a reduction in final disposal costs, while new revenue streams were generated through the energy recovery of the produced outputs. At the same time, full compliance with environmental legislation requirements and national circular economy targets strengthened Antipollution’s credibility and corporate reputation, expanding its network of collaborating entities and encouraging new strategic synergies with both private and public sector stakeholders.
