M.J. MAILLIS SINGLE MEMBER S.A. is one of the top steel strap producers in the world. Steel strap is considered one of the most sustainable products in packaging as it can be 100% recycled.
The aim of the initiative was for our company to become one of our customers’ preferred trading partners by participating in the Ecovadis assessment. Furthermore, to receive a customized sustainability and carbon scorecard from Ecovadis offering detailed insights into our strengths and improvement areas as well as a benchmark with our industry peers.
The program is addressed to the company's employees but mainly to external stakeholders (customers, partners, local community, audit authorities) and confirms the company's commitment to the continuous improvement of our sustainability management system, considering its performance on the Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement themes across operational sites.
Three months
The objective of the EcoVadis rating process is to assess the quality of our company’s sustainability management system. As a first step we registered on the EcoVadis platform and started answering the related questions. In the assessment questionnaire, we were asked to provide the following documents to support our answers.
• Policies: qualitative objectives/commitments, and quantitative targets that have the following main conditions: quantitative goal to be achieved, baseline and target year with a clear future deadline.
• Actions: concrete measures and procedures that are implemented.
• Results: up-to-date key performance indicators (KPIs) about past performance.
After completion of the questionnaire EcoVadis analysts review all supporting documents uploaded by the company to determine if they meet the document standards and then look for sufficient evidence to approve the declarations. The bigger the number of declarations for which sufficient evidence has been provided, the higher the chances of the company achieving a greater score in ”Sustainability Scorecard” which they issue.
Furthermore, customized recommendations will be given to our company to create the action plan for improvement.
Ecovadis assessment engages our company to act and increase the performance on the Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement themes across operational sites.

The Sustainability Manager assigned to do the collection of data, in cooperation with the relevant departments of our company and has taken charge of completing the questionnaire. EcoVadis “Help Center” tool on the platform and their support team helped us significantly in completing and registering the questionnaire.
Colleagues from the HR, procurement and accounting departments participated in the implementation of the program by collecting KPIs and relevant documentation for submission. Also essential was the participation of the production and environment department regarding the collection of operational KPIs and technical procedures.
EcoVadis is internationally recognized and allows our company to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability, ethics, and social responsibility. This assessment will help strengthen our company's reputation with stakeholders, including customers, suppliers and investors.
EcoVadis rating system goes beyond compliance and encourages companies to undertake sustainability efforts that surpass pure observance of law. Furthermore it engages our company in benchmarking and monitoring to mitigate risk and improve our sustainability performance.
