The management of dredgings constitutes one of the most complex environmental challenges associated with the sustainable operation of modern port infrastructure. For Antipollution, this challenge goes beyond the safe removal and treatment of a particularly demanding hazardous waste stream and extends to the overall redesign of its management chain.
The objective of the initiative is the implementation of an integrated circular management model, through which contaminated port sediments, which under conventional conditions would be directed to final disposal, are transformed into recoverable secondary resources with new productive value.
By leveraging its specialized know-how, operational experience, and licensed infrastructure, Antipollution integrates the collection, transportation, treatment, and recovery of dredgings into a single management chain, while ensuring full traceability, a high level of environmental protection, and strict regulatory compliance.
Through this approach, the management of hazardous port waste is incorporated into a broader framework of circular utilization, in which marine environmental protection, resource recovery, and industrial circularity are linked to the creation of long-term environmental and productive value.

The initiative is primarily addressed to the port and industrial sectors, and in particular to organizations, companies, and entities that are required to manage complex and contaminated waste streams in environments characterized by high requirements in terms of safety, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance.
At the same time, it concerns port and institutional authorities, companies across the industrial value chain, and other stakeholders seeking to transition from conventional linear waste management models to integrated solutions for resource recovery and circular utilization.

Behind the continuous development and operational activity of major ports, significant quantities of dredgings are generated, often bearing the imprint of long-standing industrial and port activity. These materials do not simply constitute a technical by-product of dredging operations. In most cases, they are classified as hazardous waste and require specialized management at every stage of the treatment and recovery chain.
Traditionally, comparable waste streams are primarily treated as an environmental burden, with limited opportunities for recovery and utilization. Within this context, Antipollution applies an integrated circular management model for dredgings arising from dredging operations at the Port of Piraeus, shifting the focus from waste management toward the recovery of the value that these materials may contain.
The company’s approach covers the entire management chain and is not limited to the safe removal of contaminated sediments from the port environment. It extends to their systematic treatment and utilization as secondary resources, integrating circular economy principles in practice within a particularly demanding port management environment.
The dredgings are collected through specialized floating equipment and transferred to Antipollution’s licensed hazardous waste management facility in Ritsona, where they undergo specialized treatment and recovery processes. The ability to combine marine operational management with specialized treatment at a licensed land-based facility enables the company to manage this specific waste stream with continuity, control, and traceability throughout the entire chain.
The management of the dredgings is also supported by systematic sampling and laboratory testing of the materials. Upon receipt of each load, analyses are carried out on a batch-by-batch basis in order to document the characteristics of the incoming materials, while additional periodic controls are also performed through composite samples. The analysis results are compiled and monitored on a regular basis, adding a further level of documentation and control to the overall management process.
This practice further strengthens the traceability of the model, as monitoring is not limited to the operational stages of collection, transportation, and treatment, but is also supported by laboratory documentation of the material characteristics. In this way, Antipollution establishes a more comprehensive monitoring framework for a particularly demanding waste stream, strengthening the reliability and environmental documentation of its management.
A key element of the model is the implementation of R5 recycling and recovery operations. Through these operations, the treated dredgings are transformed into Alternative Raw Materials – ARM, namely secondary materials that can be reintegrated into production cycles and industrial applications, contributing to the substitution of natural resources and supporting the sustainable use of materials.
The substantive innovation of the initiative lies precisely in this transition: from a linear management model, in which waste completes its lifecycle through final disposal, to a circular utilization model, in which the same material acquires a new use and new productive potential.

At the same time, the utilization of treated dredgings through R5 operations significantly reduces the need for final disposal and enables the transition from a linear management model to an integrated circular economy approach. The materials are no longer treated exclusively as waste and are reintegrated into industrial cycles as alternative raw materials, while the application of systematic sampling and laboratory testing further strengthens the documentation and traceability of the management process.
The significance of the initiative, however, extends beyond the immediate outcome of recovery. The project demonstrates the effective application of circular economy principles even to waste streams of high technical and environmental complexity, when specialized expertise, appropriate infrastructure, systematic monitoring, and integrated operational management are combined.
At the same time, it establishes an applicable model for the sustainable management of complex port waste streams, in which environmental compliance, documentation, and resource recovery are integrated into a single and coherent management framework.
The initiative is implemented at the Port of Piraeus, where dredging operations and the collection of dredgings take place, and at Antipollution’s licensed hazardous waste management facility in Ritsona, where the processes of treatment, recovery, and production of alternative raw materials are carried out.
