The Region of Thessaly is one of the thirteen regions of Greece. It consists of vast agricultural lands, which is why its inhabitants are mainly fed by agriculture and animal husbandry. Notable places that can be visited are Kalambaka with Meteora, Pyli with its unique Monasteries and Bridges, Elati, the Pertouli Ski Center of the Municipality of Pyli, Pelion and Lake N. Plastira.
Culture is a fundamental human right, a basic social good and an important factor in the economy and society. It is recognized as the fourth pillar of sustainable development, a catalyst for innovative developments in the industry and service sectors and a key element of the Europe 2020 strategy.
The region of Thessaly through the ESPA and the Public Investment Program contributes and supports the culture and at the same time the cultural heritage of the place. Through its interventions, the church monuments continue to remain unscathed by the wear and tear of time and contribute significantly to both cultural and touristic levels, upgrading Thessaly. Thanks to this support from the Region, religious monuments are the pillars of religious tourism and at the same time keep us connected to our important cultural past. For this purpose, the Region of Thessaly has spent over 20 million euros for the restoration of all these churches. The 79 interventions concern the restoration and highlighting of important religious monuments in the well-known Meteora, but also in other areas that hide important ecclesiastical treasures.

The Region of Thessaly has spent over 20 million euros on the restoration of the churches. The 79 interventions concern the restoration and highlighting of important religious monuments in the well-known Meteora, but also in other areas that hide important ecclesiastical treasures.
ESPA of Thessaly: Saved church monuments from deterioration
With funding from the NSPA of Thessaly, many ecclesiastical monuments were preserved that would otherwise have been left to the ravages of time. These projects are the following:
-Fixing-Rehabilitation of parts of external masonry, replacement of worn stones and stone carvings, construction of a Guard and Information hut, replacement of Sanitary Rooms and configuration of the surrounding area, of the I.N. Holy Cross of Dolianon Kranias Expanded Community of Aspropotamos Trikala, 300,000 euros
-Conservation works of frescoes and Temple of the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos D.D. Vasiliki D. Meteoron, 547,160 euros

Thanks to the modern and safe road network that the Region has, these 79 religious monuments of Thessaly after their maintenance and restoration are easily accessible and are developing into an emerging tourist destination, with tangible and measurable results in the economic, social and cultural development of local societies . Because culture, in addition to being a basic social good, is a pillar of sustainable development and a factor in the economy.
Religious tourism, as an alternative form of tourism, shows great resilience in times of crisis and has important quality characteristics since the pilgrims-tourists are, in large part, well-off and with a high educational level. Meteora, is the strongest pole of attraction, since it hosts the second most important monastic community in the country after Mount Athos, it belongs to the UNESCO world heritage monuments and the protected monuments of humanity. At the same time, many more areas in Thessaly have churches and monasteries, which are interesting destinations for religious, historical and cultural reasons both in the prefecture of Karditsa, in Lake Plastira, as well as in Magnesia, Pelion in the Sporades, Larissa and the areas of Elassona and Olympus.
