Objective Action

The initiative titled “Painting Today for a Sustainable Planet Tomorrow” was designed with a clear mission: to cultivate environmental empathy and ecological awareness among primary school children. Through an original and creative educational approach – a student art competition – the action aimed to strengthen young people’s understanding of circular economy principles, recycling, and responsible resource management. Ultimately, the goal was to nurture a new culture of environmental responsibility, beginning in classrooms and extending into the wider local community.

Target Audience

The initiative was primarily addressed to students in Grades 1 to 6 of primary schools in the Municipality of Kifisia. Additionally, the initiative had a secondary but powerful impact on teachers, families, and the broader local community, generating a ripple effect and fostering collective awareness and participation in sustainable practices.

Duration

September – November 2024 (approx. 3 months total duration).

Description

This innovative action combined environmental education with artistic creativity and experiential engagement. At the heart of the initiative was a visual arts competition, where children were invited to illustrate their personal vision of a sustainable future using their imagination and creativity.

Prior to participating in the competition, students attended interactive educational workshops designed and delivered by the environmental agency Nowaste 21. These in-school sessions were tailored to the students' age groups and introduced key sustainability concepts – such as circular economy, responsible consumption, and the value of reuse and recycle– through play-based and participatory methods.

The final stage of the initiative included the evaluation of submissions and the organization of an awards ceremony. This event served as both the culmination of the educational journey and a celebration of environmental values, with participation from students, families, teachers, and local officials.
