WeFor

An Athens-based NGO focused on reshaping the conversation around important social matters.
In cooperation with the Municipality of Athens.

Objective Action

In September 2021, WeFor was established, having at its core the belief that our generation can and must live up to the challenges of the 21st century. WeFor is a Non-profit organisation, comprised of young, active and passionate people with experience in social NGOs and a profound interest in genuinely contributing to our society’s evolution. Aiming to redefine how a conversation is carried out, WeFor is built on the basis that in order to resolve a problem, one needs to take the first step, which is no other than recognising it.

The organisation’s motto is “Change we need, impact we want”, therefore it strives to achieve impact by putting the problem front and centre, through initiatives, events and actions. With support from the Municipality of Athens, WeFor is putting social concerns forward, in an effort to inspire young people across the country to join the solution.

Commencing its first campaign on January 24, 2021, titled “WeForWomen”, the organisation set out to address one of the greatest challenges our generation faces: substantial gender equality.

According to recent data, Greece holds the last place, among EU member states, on the Index for gender equality of the European Institute, while 1 in 16 women experience domestic violence. These data are not the only indications of how poorly gender equality is treated in Greece, since it only takes some browsing of the newscasts in order to realise the gravity of the situation.

The appearance of the #MeToo movement in the greek social and political scene simply shed some light on a  phenomenon deeply rooted in our society’s core. Women’s political underrepresentation, discriminations in the workplace and cases of gender violence make up a picture that we must change.

Target Audience

During 2021, through our initiatives and actions, our organisation addressed all those wishing to ameliorate gender equality indicators in our country. Our target audience is all the people seeking the opportunity to create, to take the step and make an impact, to find a way to evolve. We are here for every young person -and all those feeling young at heart- who are concerned with the social and political developments of the country, but most of all for those who want to take action. There is a vast active part of the young population, while a lot of them do not know where to start from to achieve social change. We intend to provide a contact point and a thematic area to focus each year, so that we can shed light on a particular challenge, through discretion, candour and creativity. If not us, who? If not now, when?

Duration

WeFor's "WeForWomen" campaign lasted 1 year. The organization dedicated 2021 to Women and Gender Equality by organizing successful events. In the year 2022 the organization will dedicate its actions to the fight against Climate Change.

Description

The first step in addressing a problem is realising its existence. This realisation is imparted in a discreet, yet comprehensible and dynamic manner, so that it stands out. We belong to a generation of social media activism. However, if we want to truly engage with challenges faced, we must do more than “repost”. Contrary to the practices of other organisations and NGOs, WeFor structures each campaign with a comprehensive approach, with a view of alarming and educating its audience by utilising and creating new means.

Having realised the problem, WeForWomen came to encompass a subject matter that had long been part of casual interpersonal conversations, but only an incidental reference in public dialogue, as a news flash. The organisation intended to pay gender equality the attention it requires, by establishing a network of exchanging ideas, where each and every person would be both the transmitter and the recipient of those ideas. Consequently, conceptions, ideas and beliefs would be gradually revised, therefore changing our stance towards social constructs and cultivating a social space for advanced conversation - which is the goal of WeFor.

For the WeForWoemen campaign, the main event was “Her name in Bold”, held on March 7th, 2021, under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens and the Technopolis City of Athens. We gathered 6 women with diverse backgrounds to share their own personal stories of navigating womanhood. From the field of politics, we had Nadia Giannakopoulou MP representing domain B2 of Athens; the field of journalism was covered by Sophia Papaioannou, journalist and co-founder of Istorima; Myrto Denaxa represented the field of science, a neuroscientist and a PI at BSRC Alexander Fleming; Maria Hadjioannou represented the military, as sergeant major and military recruiter; from the field of entrepreneurship we welcomed the presence of Efi Koutsoureli; last but not least, Maria Nafpliotou honoured us with her presence, representing the field of arts and theatre.

Having a holistic approach during the "WeForWomen" campaign, the next project highlights this time the theme of equality and its importance, through art.

"CinEquality" was an open-air cinema, in collaboration with the streaming service "ERTflix" and ERT. It took place on Friday, June 18, in the heart of Athens, at the metallurgical complex,  Piraeus 127, under the auspices of the Municipality Of Athens and the General Secretariat for Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality. The documentary series "A day for the whole world" was screened, in particular the episodes of "International Women's Day" (parts A and B), which tell stories of women, regarding gender-based violence and professional empowerment. Before the screening, an open discussion was held on the topic of equality in our country and the role that art can play in tackling inequality. The discussion was attended by Mrs. Zeta Douka, who is a leader in the field of art and contributed significantly to the launch of the #metoo movement in our country. In addition, we were honoured with the presence of Mrs. Nadia Giannakopoulou, MP for the domain B2 of Athens and Vassilis Koutsoumbas, Founder & Executive Director of WeFor. The discussion was moderated by journalist Nikos Efstathiou from Kathimerini.

The initiative that concluded the campaign “WeForWomen” occured on December 4, at the Hellenic Foundation, under the auspices of UNESCO, the Municipality of Athens and the National Chamber Network of Greek Women Entrepreneurs (EEDEGE). Titled “A bridge between and Equality”, the event aimed at exploring the topic of women and culture. Through a timeless perspective, in the presence of distinguished and renowned people and students from the field of Culture, an intergenerational discussion was held about the role that women have and can play in this field in the future, as well as the manifestations that this role assumes in Greece in 2021. The event was attended by the Secretary General of Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality, Mrs. Yianna Hormova, Mrs. Sofia Kounenaki-Efraimoglou, Vice President of the Foundation for the Hellenic World and President of EEDEGE. The discussion was also joined by Ms. Matina Goga, Communication and Program Development Coordinator of the Center for Greek Studies at Harvard University in Greece, USEUM programmer and Founder, Fotini Valeonti and actor Maximos Moumouris. Moderator of the discussion was the journalist and presenter Dora Anagnostopoulou. The event ended with a musical performance by Pavlina Voulgaraki.

Impact on Society

Initiative Location

WeFor is based in Athens. The team of WeFor consists of young, passionate people who, while previously active in social groups based in Athens, observed the following: a lack of the space and time required to adequately address some topics. When looking at things from a distance, their true dimension is undetectable. The organisation aims to become part of the city, to connect with the pulse of Athens and its fresh face of culture and vibrancy. As we head  into the post-Covid era, WeFor intends to open discussions on gender equality, on Climate change etc; for each WeFor thematic area, we will connect daily life with social development, with culture, with arts.

Working with Organization

Apart from the aforementioned collaborations formed with the Municipality of Athens, ERT, General Secretariat for Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality, National Chamber Network of Greek Women Entrepreneurs, UNESCO (Piraeus & Islands Group), WeFor also collaborated with a large number of people on Equality and Women's Empowerment.

Some of the names worth mentioning: Eva Kaili- MEP Kin.Al, Olga Kefalogianni- former Minister & Member of Parliament for Nea Demokratia, Angela Maria Arbelaez, President of Artbridges who supports  Roma children and Refugees through the arts in Lesvos, Maria Nefeli Hadjioannidou, founder of the  community "Wonderful Women".

What follows is the 3rd cycle of the Podcast "6 Men talk about Equality", where men were given a step and a framework to express their own point of view and their own experiences related to inequality phenomena taking place under various circumstances and in different fields.

In addition, in parallel with “Her Name In Bold” (our main event), the #IamRemarkable workshop was held by KINITRO with the support of Google, as well as a workshop by Women On Top and a performance by Flux Laboratory and Shift.

The proceeds from the invitations of the CinEquality event were distributed to the Doctors of the World, specifically to the "Ramona" hospitality structure. The proceeds from the invitations of the event “A bridge between Culture and Equality” were donated to the Non-Governmental Organization AMAKA, to support its initiatives on issues of gender equality.

Finally, the organization participated in local social activities. These accomplishments are the reason WeFor has been distinguished by the #YouEU project as a best practice for promoting the active participation of young people in democratic processes.

Benefits for Οrganization

In September 2020, WeFor was established with the aim of bringing together and raising awareness on important issues of our contemporary era. Two years, two subject areas and five initiatives later, we are fully integrated in the social development of Athens. This conclusion stems not only from our successful undertakings during the year of WeForWomen (2021), nor from the expectations of all of us for 2022, with our new campaign, WeForClimate. The confirmation comes from the support we constantly receive from organizations, associations and companies, which recognize our effort and actively support our initiatives. For the WeForWomen (2021) campaign we were pleased and honoured to be under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens, Club for Unesco of Piraeus and Islands as well as the National Chamber Network of Greek Women Entrepreneurs. At the same time, we receive the kind sponsorships of companies and business groups such as Interamerican - Anytime (2000 €), Ravago Greece Group (1000 €), Global Prep Center (1500 €) and Deree - The American College of Greece (1000 €). We also secured the support of companies (E-food, Colgate, Dios Waters, Pak Sisters, Kampos Chiou, Sanex, Papoutsanis) for our live events, through the donation of products and equipment.
