Objective Action

Meeting the irrigation needs of Costa Navarino while preserving the water reserves of the area.

Target Audience

Local community, local & regional authorities, visitors

Duration

2006 -

Description

Committed to the sustainable use of water resources, TEMES has conducted an extensive water resource management study for the area of western Messinia. The purpose of this study was to:

• Identify the area’s available water resources.
• Explore the impact of climate change on the quality and availability of water resources.
• Design a sustainable water management system for Costa Navarino which will use only water that is naturally replaced.
• Provide detailed hydro-geological data to local authorities, so that they can develop a sustainable water management system at a regional level.

As a result of this study, the irrigation needs of Costa Navarino, are met by water from two reservoirs of approximate total capacity 700,000 m³, specifically designed and constructed by TEMES for this purpose. The reservoirs, fully integrated into the surrounding landscape, are filled by utilizing only a very small percentage (approximately 2%) of the excess runoff from the local rivers, just before flowing into the sea. This water, together with highly treated recycled water from our wastewater treatment plant, is more than enough to cover the irrigation needs of Costa Navarino for the whole season.

Impact on Society

The hydrogeological data from the water management study and the data recordings from the monitoring system of TEMES, related with the water resources of the area, were incorporated in the water management plan prepared by the prefecture of Peloponnese. Most of the study findings are used by the local municipality for the planning and construction of water management infrastructure works. The sustainable planning and operation of the water management system of Costa Navarino is fundamental for the development of multiple economic activities in the area (agriculture, tourism) that enhance local economy, without conflicts for the use of water resources.

Benefits for Οrganization

The sustainable design of the water management infrastructure of Costa Navarino has taken into consideration the scenarios for climate change in order to secure long term water availability. Due to the sustainable design of the water management infrastructure for Costa Navarino, the operation of the facilities does not influence the water availability in the area. This is one of the fundamental reasons that Costa Navarino enjoys such a great acceptance from the local community. Guests at Costa Navarino appreciate how sustainable water management is achieved and more particularly for those with a direct interest, e.g. golfers. The sustainable design and operation of Costa Navarino is a significant competitive advantage as more than a third of travelers are found to favor environmentally-friendly tourism destinations.
