Objective Action

The President of Piraeus Port Authority S.A., Mr. Yu Zenggang, stated characteristically, "The goal of Piraeus Port Authority S.A. is to provide upgraded services for the repair and maintenance of ships, which will be accessible to all companies operating in the area. However, the most important fact of all is that the NEZ is now a pole for the creation of new jobs, with a positive impact on the local economy. All relevant projects foreseen within the framework of the mandatory investments of 55 million euros are progressing smoothly, according to planning and are giving a strong impetus to the local shipbuilding and repair industry towards the development of the port of Piraeus into an important regional ship repair hub."

Description

The works were part of the second phase of a broader infrastructure improvement project in the Perama Ship Repair Zone involving a complete platform replacement.

In addition, during the second half of 2022, maintenance works started and completed at the Piraeus I floating dock. The scope of the project included among others, the replacement of nearly 400 tons of steel plates & stiffeners, high-pressure hydro-blasting & anti corrosion painting in the ballast tanks and external areas, as well as the maintenance and repair of pumps, valves and piping systems. During the whole period of special inspection and repair, the average number of workforce in dock and workshops reached 150 per day, while directly driving the need of a large number of materials and relating supporting business activities.

As a result, this created a large number of job and income opportunities for local workers and relevant staff in the industry.

Overall, the systematic enhancement projects and the targeted investments at the Perama Ship Repair Zone started back in 2016 by COSCO SHIPPING Group, greatly contributed towards the revitalization of the Ship Repair industry in the country. All repair operation indicators are improving on a year on year basis, while enabling state of the art services, higher capacity solutions and the higher safety standards.

It is worth noting that in 2016 only 69 vessels docked in PPA floating docks, while in the year 2022 almost doubled, reaching 133 ships. The working days in the docks increased similarly, almost tripled, from 435 in 2016 to 1306 in 2022.

The systematic upgrade projects and targeted investments in the Perama shipbuilding and repair zone that began in 2016 by the COSCO SHIPPING Group have contributed overall to the strengthening of the Shipbuilding and Repair sector in our country. All relevant performance indicators are improving year by year, in parallel with the latest technology solutions, the expanded capacity dynamics and the highest safety standards provided. It is worth noting that in 2016 only 69 ships were docked in PPA floating tanks, while in 2022 it is expected to reach approximately 150 ships. The working days in the tanks have similarly increased from 435 in 2016 to 1306 in 2022.
