Objective Action

Creating a safer itinerary for the transportation of students from home to school.

Target Audience

Children - students - guardians (school community) and furthermore, residents in the area/influence zone of the school and trespassers from neighborhood districts.

Duration

2014 - 2015

Description

At first, we took into consideration the current legislation and framework on accessibility for all and other technical guidelines. Secondly, we collected the data on the needs and traffic situation of all the educational establishments between the boundaries of the Municipality. From the above, an overall scenario of Municipality planning was formed and 28 school establishments were proposed for the construction of rings. The relevant Services of the Municipality initially carried out the analysis of the above action, the options for the configuration of the school rings and the studies in four school establishments. The studies concern the appropriate configuration of public spaces around schools, in order to achieve safe access of students (school rings), optimizing of accessibility, as well as guidance of students through safe passages at the school entrance.

All the suggested interventions focus on:

a) Substantially reducing the speed of vehicles passing through the area.
b) Enhancing safety and facilitating the movement of pedestrians and students, with the use of appropriate material and with the necessary traffic regulations (replacement/selection of appropriate material for reducing speed, placing barriers, creating traffic necks, supporting configurations in public spaces of the wider area, uneven levels, ramps, signposting etc).

After the completion of 4 studies, the Tender Documents will be composed and the administrative process (correspondence and suggestions) for opinions, approvals and any funding for implementation of the project will be followed.
