From Restoration to Prevention: Nova Standing by Local Communities Against the Climate Crisis

BUSINESS: 615 PRACTICES

The main objective of the initiative is to create an integrated framework for protecting and strengthening the resilience of local communities affected by the climate crisis. Going beyond the traditional corporate donation model, Nova aims to provide meaningful protection for people and local communities experiencing the impacts of climate change through two complementary pillars: on the one hand, the immediate restoration of natural infrastructure and ecosystems in affected areas (anti-erosion works), and on the other, the prevention and early management of risks through innovative digital protection technologies (Smart Forest). The initiative seeks to support natural regeneration, prevent secondary disasters such as floods, and strengthen the safety, resilience, and day-to-day protection of residents in high-risk areas.

Residents and local communities in affected areas (Evros, Rhodes, Attica), Civil Protection authorities, the scientific community, and the wider public benefiting from the protection of forest ecosystems.
The restoration and regeneration program was launched immediately after the devastating wildfires of 2023 and continues intensively throughout 2024 and 2025. It includes medium-term planning for the maintenance of the works and the operation of the digital prevention systems.
The devastating wildfires of recent years dramatically highlighted the urgent need to protect local communities, natural ecosystems, and critical infrastructure across the country. Following the major wildfires of 2023, Nova launched a strategic investment of 1 million euros, developing an integrated model of restoration, prevention, and digital protection against the climate crisis, creating a benchmark initiative for Greece. The initiative was designed not only to support the environmental restoration of affected areas, but also to strengthen the safety, resilience, and everyday protection of local communities increasingly exposed to natural disasters.
Pillar A: The Institutional Role of the Restoration and Reforestation Contractor
The innovation of the initiative begins with its implementation model. Nova operated as a “Restoration and Reforestation Contractor” in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Energy. This means that the company did not merely provide financial resources, but also assumed responsibility for the design and implementation of critical technical works immediately after the disaster. Through this model, Nova went beyond financial support and actively participated in the planning and immediate implementation of restoration projects in areas of high environmental and social vulnerability.
Pillar B: Digital Protection – The Smart Forest Initiative
In cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and the General Directorate of Forests and Forest Land, Nova donated and implemented the "Smart Forest" program to Rhodes. This initiative tangibly demonstrates how digital infrastructure and next-generation technologies serve as a critical tool for prevention and civil protection against natural disasters brought about by the climate crisis.
Why Rhodes: The island is an international brand name and a flagship of our tourism, which was, however, severely affected by wildfires, leaving its biodiversity vulnerable. The iconic "Petaloudes" (Valley of the Butterflies) area was selected for the program's implementation due to its high environmental and aesthetic symbolism.
Technological Excellence & Impact: The program is an integrated prevention and early warning system that operates via a central management platform and combines:
The ability to detect fire outbreaks early allows for the rapid mobilization of competent authorities, limiting the risk of spreading. In this way, "Smart Forest" effectively protects human lives, settlements, critical infrastructure, as well as wildlife. At the same time, it safeguards the Natura 2000 protected area "Valley of the Butterflies," which constitutes a vital pillar for the economy and sustainability of the island's local community.
The initiative forms part of a broader approach aimed at shifting from a reactive model of environmental restoration following disasters to a modern framework focused on prevention and Civil Protection through the use of advanced technologies. In this way, Nova actively contributes to building more resilient local communities while protecting human lives, animals, and valuable natural ecosystems.

The initiative generated tangible and measurable results demonstrating the scale of the intervention:
Social Recognition: Nova was awarded by the Ministry of Environment and Energy for its contribution, while the initiative received extensive publicity, highlighting the role the private sector can play in disaster prevention and management. At the same time, the initiative demonstrated the importance of collaboration between businesses, the State, and local communities in protecting vulnerable areas, strengthening climate resilience
The initiative was implemented at a national level, with targeted interventions in critical geographic areas: Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region (Dadia Forest), South Aegean Region (Rhodes), and Attica Region (Penteli).
Nova employees actively participate in the implementation of the company’s social responsibility strategy through volunteer field actions. A notable example is the mobilization of volunteer employee groups for the reforestation of the Holy Monastery of Penteli.
Within the framework of this initiative:
The active participation of employees strengthened the company’s connection with local communities and highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing the impacts of the climate crisis. At the same time, it fostered a stronger culture of active participation and environmental responsibility within the company.
Fostering a stronger culture of participation, volunteerism, and environmental responsibility among employees through actions of national significance.
