4 years ago the Region of Western Greece set as its main goal the establishment of itself as an energy hub and Corridor of Sustainable Development. It was then decided that one of the most backward regions of the country should change its management model, implement new strategies and take advantage of its special and rich human geography.
Considering that green entrepreneurship can contribute to its development, the Region of Western Greece:
- exploited the most of all available financial tools
- greatly reduced bureaucratic hurdles and accelerated the time of the relevant licensing procedures
- systematically promoted the benefits of sustainable development in all professional sectors
- sensitized civil society and regularly implemented consultation with all institutional bodies.
Four years later, the efforts were successful, as Western Greece:
- contributed to the creation of 200 green enterprises in the fields of recycling, wastewater treatment, reuse of raw materials, rational management of natural resources and environmental protection.
- promoted the operation of 150 large enterprises distinguished for their green footprint and for the adoption of new environmental applications.
- licensed approximately 3,500 investments in mild forms of renewable energy.
- it is one of the first Regions of the country in energy storage units, with 20 approved energy storage stations with a total capacity of 650 Mw.
- Organized all available expertise on smart sustainable Green Development, through the Regional Green Paper, disseminating it to businesses and professional bodies.
- It was the first self-governing authority in the country to implement an integrated plan for the development of electric mobility.
- Implemented a substantial consultation with all stakeholders, resulting in the publication of a Smart Industry and Circular Economy Guide, including all data of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
With all of the above, it is proven that Western Greece has given its own special stamp for the Green Economy. By changing the way it operates, implementing new realistic strategies and giving incentives that were missing, it became a Channel of Sustainable Development highlighting the field of Green Entrepreneurship as one of its most basic characteristics. Especially in the period of the Covid-19 pandemic when all economic activities were limited, the Region of Western Greece boosted investment efforts targeting and creating new jobs and expanding social and development benefits. In view of the transition of the economic and social structures to a new era which is already taking place, the efforts of Western Greece will continue to achieve the Sustainable Development goals set by the UN.
