MUNICIPALITIES: 125 PRACTICES
The Community of Antiparos was founded in 1914 and was promoted to a Municipality in 2010 with the implementation of the "Kallikratis" draft law, based on the principle of "each island and municipality". It occupies an area of 35.1 sq. km. including the island of Antiparos, Despotiko and Strogylos. It counts, according to the 2001 census, 1,037 permanent residents and has a density of 29.5 inhabitants per sq.km. In Antiparos there is a Kindergarten, Primary School and High School with High School sections. The island's economy is based on tourism, fishing, animal husbandry and to a lesser extent on agriculture in the plain and its northeastern lowlands. It is known for its typical Cycladic beauty with its white houses, cobbled streets and beautiful bougainvillea blooming in the courtyards of the houses. It is a popular summer tourist resort for Greek and European visitors, but also a place of investment for American vacationers.
The Municipality of Antiparos has made it a priority to highlight the enormous benefits of recycling, to motivate, raise awareness and motivate residents to recycle on a daily basis, so that it becomes a permanent habit for everyone. In this context, we are trying to expand the scope of recycling programs that we could implement in our Municipality.
It is worth mentioning that the first marine waste collection station in Europe operates on our island, an idea presented by Aegean Rebreath and awarded at the European level, but never implemented in practice, but found a response on our island and changed the local culture.
