Recording audio literature books for blind adolescents
SUBMITTED FROM:

Read for Others

Read for Others is AMKE, a certified body by OPI for the production and distribution of audio books to the blind and print-disabled. It was founded in 2015 in Athens with the vision that every citizen -whether they see it or not- can read any book they want and desire. We have three pillars of actions: 1. Recording of audio literary and university books and their distribution in the audio libraries for viewers, "Homer" https://www.pstomiros.gr/ "Amelib" https://amelib.seab.gr/ 2. Live therapeutic readings in the elderly in Elderly Care Units and individually. 3. Awareness-raising activities for students and staff on unequal access to knowledge and learning

Objective Action

Reading for Others (RfO) records audio books with main goal adolescents merely or fully blind being able to access to reading, good and indefeasible right of every social group.

Target Audience

Blind adolescents and pre-teens

Duration

09/2020-06/2021

Description

RfO is certified from the Hellenic Copyright Organization to produce and allocate audio books for the blind and print-disabled persons. Since 2015, we allocate the books we record to Omiros https://pstomiros.gr/  and Amelib https://amelib.seab.gr/ audio libraries. From book recording requests addressed to us from blind persons themselves, we realized there is a great deficit of literature books for children and adolescents.

On September 2020 we began recording 8 literature books for adolescents.

We advised the community of blinds and educators and we chose books we believe that correspond today’s adolescents’ needs and preferences.

Once again, we chose each book to be recorded by a volunteer – reader, after voice evaluation and proper coaching. Under RfO’s charter, we choose recording taking place by volunteers; in this way, we strongly believe that the social impact is much bigger.

Impact on Society

The books will be soon accessible since we expect them to be uploaded to Omiros audio library. Formal statistics about the exact number of blind persons now in Greece do not exist, yet it is estimated that there are approximately 25000 persons.

The books are allocated today but they will be forever available at Omiros, for the existing and future users of the platform.

Benefits for Οrganization

In RfO, our mission is achieving equal access for blind persons and other vulnerable social groups to knowledge, learning and books. We aim at maximizing audio books production for persons with visual impairment and every implementation as this one brings us one step closer to our long-term goal, not needing to exist. We visualize that every citizen - whether is blind or not- is able ti read “The House of Sleep”, The Pendulum of Foucault” and, in general, every book (s)he wants and desires.
