KALLIMANIS CSR for Maritime and the Oceans: The aim being the protection of the largest producers of oxygen of our planet, that is to say the Sea, as well as the protection of marine biodiversity.
Management of Solid and Liquid waste at the corporate (where two production units are located) as a protection means of the Sea: Pollution from sewage effluents and agricultural runoff can lead to eutrophication, i.e. the excessive growth of phytoplankton. When decomposed, algae uses the oxygen which is present in the water. In certain regions, this phenomenon has led to the creation of "dead zones" (CDZ), that is to say, to areas where the oxygen contained in the sea drops in such a low level that it cannot support life therein. Such dead zones can also be caused by the discharge of substances from industrial production which, during their decomposition, they absorb the dissolved oxygen.

KALLIMANIS’ EMS came into operation in 2010 and the program of cooperation with the Municipality of Aegio has been in force as from 2013. It is clear that the EMS is dynamic and not static and therefore, enhanced and improved on an ongoing basis.
KALLIMANIS’ priority in the field of environmental policy is the adoption of policies, measures and projects aimed at the efficient and rational management of waste for the sustainable use of resources and the prevention of the deterioration or the restoration, maintenance or improvement of the local, national and international environment. The integrated environmental management is entirely aligned with the Lisbon Strategy for innovation, competitiveness, growth, while experience shows that the creation of an integrated environmental management system can help promoting the objectives of sustainability.
In this context, the company has developed a wide Environmental Management System (EMS) which is monitored, maintained and improved through inspection programs, evaluations and reviews. KALLIMANIS’ Environmental Policy seeks much more than a simple EMS; it doesn’t limit itself only to compliance with the applicable laws but it tries whenever possible to excel. KALLIMANIS’ EMS includes practices of Wastewater and Solid Waste, which are summarized as follows:
1. By-Product Management, i.e. solid organic waste (in collaboration with animal feed manufacturer on a contract basis for all products from production and commercial activities).
2. Management of carton boxes (collaboration with paper recycling company for a recycling of about 200 tons of paper per year).
3. Management of plastic wastes (collaboration with plastic recycling company for about 30 tons of plastic per year).
4. EPS Management (cooperation with EPS recycling company for about 8 tons EPS per year).
5. Battery Management of forklift trucks as well as of regular trucks.
6. Lamps Recycling.
7. Battery Recycling.
8. SCRAP Recycling.
9. Recycling oil from maintenance machinery and trucks.
10. Wastewater treatment system.
11. Cooperation with the Municipality of Aegio (where KALLIMANIS’ two production plants are located) to reduce waste by separating recyclable from non-recyclable materials. The separation is realized with bags of three colors.
KALLIMANIS’ Wastewater Management and Solid Waste programme is part of a broader Environmental Management System which includes: Energy Footprint, Energy Conservation for chiller, Cold Stores, Production, Transportation, as well as the overall Corporate Operation System. KALLIMANIS’ EMS aims at the improvement of the environmental performance of the wider Aegealia Region, which is an attractive tourist destination, but also at the improvement of the quality of life as the water charge has no boundaries.
In general, the results of the program of the Citizens of Sea include:
1. The minimum charge of both the aquifer and the Sea.
2. The strengthening of environmental awareness of KALLIMANIS’ employees.
3. The contribution to the achievement of objectives relating to the environment and the Lisbon Strategy "to make Europe a more attractive place to invest and work".
In particular, the results include:
1. Minimising at 1% (!) the waste for disposal to landfill, an ambitious aim pursuit by Municipality of Aegio as a counterbalance of the severe problems raised by the local landfills.
2. The waste are processed in recycling plant located in Achaia region, allowing extra financial benefits for the Municipality of Aegio.
