OFFER TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE GREEK OUTERMOST ISLANDS

MUNICIPALITIES: 135 PRACTICES
Symplefsis organization supports and improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of the Greek outlying islands. In particular, it aims to make a substantial contribution to ensure equal access of the inhabitants of the island regions to basic goods such as health, education, culture and infrastructure, thus reducing the need for them to move to larger islands and bridging the gap with the corresponding living conditions in the cities of Greece.
The action of the +Plefsis is addressed to all residents of the Greek outlying islands, regardless of age.
annual crossings and autumn expeditions as mentioned above
Symplefsis is an organisation founded in 2014, with the aim of supporting and improving the living conditions of the inhabitants of the Greek outlying islands.
Purely voluntary in nature, +πλευση organizes activities throughout the year, aiming to provide maximum benefit to the outlying islands.
In order to support the residents, the Assembly focuses its actions on three thematic pillars:
1. Provision of free medical examinations
1.1. We provide a primary health service in over 20 medical & paramedical specialties, while taking blood samples, Pap tests and biopsies, if the latter is deemed necessary. We try hard to offer our services to all our locals who come to our +puta clinics because we are aware that if we do not, they are very unlikely to see other doctors until a volunteer is found on their island again as it is costly and time consuming for them to travel to a main island or the mainland to have tests done.
2. Implementation of infrastructure projects
The Authority maintains close contact with the local authorities in
It listens to their needs, evaluates their requests, seeks solutions and innovative actions, before starting to implement sponsorship activities in cooperation with companies and individuals.
We strive to give residents and visitors of the islands the quality of life we all enjoy by undertaking projects such as desalination plants, floating harbour piers, multi-pedestrian areas, playgrounds, donating medical equipment and machinery to local clinics, etc. In addition, we assist in the educational infrastructure, by supplying material and technical equipment, educational toys, books and other learning materials, based on recorded and updated needs of schools.
3. Cultural and educational activities
We carry out a series of informative programs for the public, focusing on prevention in areas such as smoking and breast cancer, empowerment against violence and harassment, proper nutrition, sex education for adolescents, the importance of sports and many more.
At the same time, we promote entertainment and culture through corresponding events. We organise STEAM workshops, shadow theatre performances, cognitive games, museum constructions, etc.
In fact, in 2022, in an effort to be by the side of the islanders throughout the year, Online (via zoom) workshops and interactive seminars were also launched and embraced by the islanders.
We are looking for the most active people in sports and culture to join us on the islands, we are adding our own most capable volunteers, we are looking for cooperation with the major institutions and museums, for the greatest possible contribution.
The pillars of our initiative are "unfolded" through the two major actions that we carry out primarily, every year:
Annual Crossing:
It takes place in spring, before the tourist season starts. Crossing the Aegean Sea, every 24 hours with our volunteers' inflatable boats, we arrive at an isolated or remote island, set up and operate medical clinics, inaugurate projects, deliver electronic and educational equipment to schools, and hold entertainment and information events for children and adults, before departing for the next destination.
Autumn Mission:
We aim to visit islands whose geographic location or other factors make it difficult to join the annual +float crossing. The major focus is on offering medical examinations and services to the largest possible percentage of residents, and we are also implementing actions in other areas.
We ensure in practice the right to free primary health care to those who are deprived of it on our islands, due to the high cost of travel and accommodation in mainland Greece and the country's major hospitals, but also due to the difficult geographical access of the island regions.
The team's doctors and nurses have performed almost 15,100 free specialized tests on over 7,800 people, collected about 2,775 blood samples (which were analyzed and the results along with comments and medical instructions were sent to the residents), performed over 390 Pap tests, bone density measurements, biopsies after removal of moles, and over 120 minor surgeries where indicated. In total we have dedicated over 5,800 clinic hours.
We have already exceeded €700,000 in infrastructure, medical care, educational equipment and materials donations to the islands.
Symplefsis volunteers have already sailed more than 4,380 nautical miles in nine Spring Aegean Crossings and nine Autumn Missions, as well as a special mission with the H.O.D.Y. to 35 islands in total.
The headquarters of the Assembly is in Athens.
But we have carried out actions in the 29 following islands:
Agathonisi, Agios Efstratios, Anafi, Antikythera, Arki, Astypalaia, Gavdos, Donousa, Herakleia, Thirassia, Thymena, Ikaria, Kasos, Kastellorizo, Kimolos, Kimolos, Keenaros, Levitha, Lipsi, Marathi, Milos, Patmos, Samothrace, Samothrace, Sikinos, Schinoussa, Telendos, Farmakonisi, Folegandros, Fourni, Pserimos.
In order to offer the best to the inhabitants of the islands we visit, we enter into partnerships, both in the medical and cultural fields, in the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 17.
Indicatively, in 2021, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, we assisted in Operation Eleftheria, vaccinating residents of Kos and Mykonos against COVID-19. With the assistance of the Hellenic Public Health Service, we carried out our missions safely, as its teams carried out rapid tests on volunteers.
We have started in 2021 & continue to work with the Hellenic Society of Adolescent Medicine to inform teenagers on a wide range of topics, with MIT Kids to implement a STEAM-based art workshop for island children and with We4All for environmental awareness among students. We collaborated with the Vision of Hope Association to increase the pool of volunteer bone marrow donors, and with the National Intermunicipal Network of Healthy Cities - Health Promotion, we carried out bone density measurement tests.
Finally, in our most recent missions, the Voluntary Action of Veterinarians of Greece (V.A.V.D.C.E.), which carries out sterilizations of stray animals on the islands and cares for stray and domestic animals, is also involved.
Symplefsis is a purely voluntary organisation. Its more than 100 members assist in the planning and implementation of its activities, offering their services, skills, skills, willingness and personal time. It is worth noting that none of the members or friends of the Assembly are paid, but each one has his or her own resources to participate in the missions.
