Duration

Preparation, 2.5 years: 2018-2020

Implementation, 2 weeks: 26/6-10/7/2020

Description

In the course of two weeks, from June 26th to July 10th 2021, three social design workshops took place with the aim to develop a strategy for promoting sustainable tourism on Poros, in Troizinia and in Methana, as well as for highlighting local sustainable tourism activities.

It was an international, intercontinental, self-financed collaboration, with the use of digital and internet tools in all the stages of preparation and implementation of the project. The topic of the project was selected by local inhabitants, through participatory processes and it was supported by the Municipalities of Poros and Troizinia-Methana and Attika Prefecture.

The preparation of the workshops included extensive research, with 20 hours of in-depth interviews and 200 questionnaires. The implementation of the workshops was hybrid, with two groups coming to the area and one collaborating virtually. Inhabitants of the area, people working in tourism, as well as youth also participated in the workshops. In the end of each week, a bi-lingual presentation of the results was offered to interested local parties, individuals and organizations, and the local authorities.

Impact on Society

The project created opportunities of networking for local professionals, with the aim of developing sustainable tourism in the area. The participants visited many local businesses offering sustainable tourism services and exchanged ideas and views. There were also three meetings, one on Poros, one in Troizinia and one in Methana, with approximately 50 local stakeholders. In the workshops themselves, approximately 15 locals participated, giving continuous feedback to the designers. In the presentations (two for each group, one mid-term, for feedback, and one final) participated a total of approximately 150 local inhabitants, members of the community and representatives of the local authorities, who were excited with the new potential for their area, on a personal and professional level.

After the completion of the workshops, the organization Project Resound continues to support the local community with its know-how, whilst the Ec(h)o consortium has completed a business plan for accomplishing the common goal, based on the results of the workshop, and has broadened, with the addition of 4 new members. In the near future (after Easter 2022), an invitation towards the public will be made for three meetings (1 on Poros, 1 in Troizinia and 1 in Methana), in order to present the business plan and move jointly forward as a community with the next steps of the project’s implementation.

Workers Participation

The preparation of the project lasted a total of 2.5 years, with a large group of people collectively dedicating over 1,170 hours to it. Three groups of a total of 37 designers and communication students from 15 countries and 9 USA states worked as volunteers for over 1,788 hours during the implementation of the project. Two groups came to the area consecutively in the weeks of 26/6-2/7 and 3/7-10/7, whilst a third one worked virtually in the second week. The groups operated independently but also as communicating vessels, giving three different versions of the strategy, for the local community to select from.

Apart from the volunteers, in the preparation and implementation of the project participated three employees of Katheti and the employees of the other two parties of the Ec(h)o consortium, Odyssey and Live-Bio.

Benefits for Οrganization

During the 2.5 years of the project’s preparation, Katheti multiplied its network of local and international collaborations and deepened its knowledge of the needs and potential of the area in which it operates. It collaborated with people from the local community, professionals, public and private entities, professional associations, the Municipalities of Poros and Troizinia-Methana, the Attika Prefecture, organizations and associations and the international academic community. Also, it increased even more the trust it enjoys in the local community. The needs that arose from working on the project contributed to its development, resulting in hiring one part-time employee.
