A holistic model for ecosystem restoration and protection, from Northern Evia to Ancient Olympia.

A holistic model for ecosystem restoration and protection, from Northern Evia to Ancient Olympia.
SUBMITTED FROM:

WE4ALL

Objective Action

The development and implementation of a holistic, scalable model for "smart" ecosystem restoration, transitioning from traditional reforestation to a climate-shielding system. The goal is to create resilient ecosystems that function as Nature-based Solutions, combining biodiversity restoration, natural disaster prevention, and the enhancement of the socio-economic resilience of local communities.

Target Audience

The initiative is addressed to multiple levels:

  • To local communities in affected areas (farmers, residents, professionals in the primary and tourism sectors).
  • To businesses implementing ESG strategies and seeking reliable, measurable actions with environmental impact.
  • To public and institutional bodies (Local Government Authorities, forestry services, etc.).
  • To volunteers and citizens who wish to participate actively in environmental protection.
  • To society at large, as a model for sustainable environmental action.

Duration

This program was launched in 2021 following the devastating wildfires in Northern Evia and remains in full development to this day.

Description

Since its founding in 2018, We4All has established itself as an international environmental organization, having planted more than 4 million trees in Greece and abroad.

This candidacy focuses on the effort to evolve this work into a benchmark model for climate shielding that transcends traditional reforestation. This model functions as an integrated mechanism for Adaptation and Mitigation of climate crisis impacts, combining ecosystem and biodiversity restoration with active support for local communities.

The project has been systematically implemented over the last 4 years and is in full development, with two symbolic regions serving as prime examples: Northern Evia and Ancient Olympia.

In Northern Evia, we are implementing a mixed restoration plan. We combine forest planting using fire-resistant species—to ensure soil retention and flood prevention—with the planting of fruit and olive trees. This action practically supports the local economy by providing livelihoods to farmers affected by the 2021 wildfires, adhering to the principles of a Just Transition.

In Ancient Olympia, the project serves as a model action plan for Climate-Resilient Restoration. The goal of planting 80,000 trees (50,000 of which are already planted) is supported by "smart" infrastructure: automated artificial rain networks and 360° monitoring stations, aiming for both restoration and the prevention of future disasters.

A central pillar of our model is aftercare. We4All does not stop at planting; we ensure the watering and maintenance of the trees, guaranteeing a very high survival rate.

These initiatives are supported by a broad network of strategic sponsors within the framework of their ESG plans. We consciously choose a multi-stakeholder funding model involving numerous corporate partners. The innovation of this specific model lies in its high scalability, serving as the "blueprint" for all We4All projects and aiming to act as a standard for Civil Society, inspiring similar initiatives.

Our ambition is for the expertise gained in Olympia and Evia to form the basis for a broader strategy to protect ecosystems on the "front line" of the climate threat—transitioning from "simple planting" to "smart shielding" and creating ecosystems that are not just green, but sustainable and protected.

Impact on Society

The initiative has already yielded significant, measurable results:

Environmental:

  • Over 80,000 plantings in intervention areas.
  • Restoration of more than 1,000 stremmata (approx. 250 acres).
  • Use of 10+ species to enhance biodiversity.
  • 90% survival rate for plantings (compared to 30–40% in traditional models).
  • Significant future CO₂ sequestration commitment.

Social:

  • Direct support for hundreds of farming families.
  • Income boost for local communities relying on agroforestry.
  • Enhancement of local resilience and employment.
  • Mobilization of thousands of citizens and employees.

Institutional / Economic:

  • Protection of natural, touristic, and cultural capital.
  • Reduction of future costs associated with natural disasters.

Initiative Location

Northern Evia and Ancient Olympia, serving as model regions with the potential for expansion to other vulnerable ecosystems across Greece and the Mediterranean.
