Piraeus Port Authority S.A. is an Athens Stock Exchange listed company engaged in the management and operation of Piraeus port, Greece’s largest port and one of the largest integrated harbours in Europe, providing a complete range of services. Some of the company’s activities involve cruise, coastal (ferry/passenger), container and car terminal services, as well as general cargo, ship repair, logistic and free zone services. The main shareholder of Piraeus Port Authority S.A., with a stake of 67 percent, is COSCO SHIPPING, one of the largest maritime companies in the world.

Over the last decade the company has experienced a remarkable growth in all port activities, which is still underway, largely contributing to the country’s economy, while driven by green development and increased digitalization, alongside a people-first approach and a spirit of giving back to the society.

PPA is a member of “ECO PORTS”, holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 50001:2018 Certifications, is included in the Athens Stock Exchange ESG index and is one of the “Most Sustainable Companies in Greece 2024”.

Objective Action

PPA S.A. targets to minimize its operational negative impacts that affect the wider community, to create a  gradual  mitigation  of  impacts  as  much  as  possible  and  to  complete  community -focused  actions  to counterbalance any residual impacts remain in the Company’s agenda and strategy.

More specifically, regarding the actions of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program, the specific objectives are identified as follows:

  • Reduction of social and economic inequalities.
  • Provision of financial support to empower the younger generation, through assistance to students for the continuation of their studies and encouragement from their first steps, laying the foundations for their professional development and success.
  • Support of vulnerable groups (including, among others, people with disabilities and Special Education Schools).

 

SDG 4: Quality education
PPA’s social initiatives promote equal access to education and learning opportunities for all. Through financial support, equal opportunities and access to knowledge are provided to first-year students who may face financial or social barriers.

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth
PPA’s social initiatives strengthen employment, education and entrepreneurship. By creating new job opportunities and supporting local communities, productivity and economic growth are enhanced.

SDG 10: Reduced inequalities
PPA’s active participation in social responsibility initiatives aimed at the inclusion and support of vulnerable groups, contributes to reducing social inequalities, promoting equal opportunities and fostering an inclusive environment.

SDG 17: Partnership for the goals
PPA’s social initiatives are based on collaborations with public or private entities and organizations, promoting synergies that enhance collective action. Through strategic partnerships and the exchange of knowledge and “know-how”, the capacity to develop and implement sustainable practices at a local level is strengthened.

Description

PPA S.A. recognizes the importance of engaging with local communities to enhance positive impacts as well as to identify and address both current and potential impacts that are or might affect their well-being. At the  same  time, to  this  end,  the  Company  actively  engages  in  open  dialogue  with  local  communities  to understand the needs of the local community. For this reason, it implements a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Action Program aimed at creating a balanced relationship with local communities and maintaining an open, transparent and constructive dialogue with them, in order to meet their needs.

Specifically, within the framework of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program, the benefits are identified as follows:

  1. Financial support for students, which constitutes a key factor for the continuation of their studies and the alleviation of any financial challenges or obstacles they may face.
  2. Enhancement of the sense of recognition and reward for students’ efforts.
  3. Provision of scholarships for the academic year 2025–2026 to support the younger generation and promote excellence. The Program includes awarding ten (10) scholarships, with a total value of €30,000, to first-year students at Greek Universities, who are graduates of Greek Public General or Vocational High Schools and residents of the Municipalities of Piraeus, Perama, Keratsini–Drapetsona, and Salamina. Each scholarship amounts to €3,000 and will be paid to the recipients in a single installment by December 31st 2025.
  4. Distribution of 4,000 gift vouchers to children in the port-adjacent Municipalities (the gift vouchers are handed over by the Management of PPA S.A. to the Mayors of Piraeus, Perama, Keratsini–Drapetsona and Salamina).
  5. Donation of gift vouchers to social welfare structures in the wider area.
  6. Participation in the establishment of the 1st Supported Living Residence of PEK/AMEA (Piraeus Association of Parents, Guardians & Friends of People with Disabilities) for adults with intellectual disabilities, through partial furnishing support.
  7. Support for the 2nd Special Primary School of Piraeus through a donation for the installation of an accessibility lift for people with disabilities and the supply of playground equipment.
  8. Support for the 16th Primary School of Korydallos, through in-kind contributions (air conditioners, playground equipment, and LED lighting), thus significantly contributing to the improvement of its facilities
  9.

Local communities of PPA S.A.

All  the  local  communities  living  around  the  port  of  Piraeus  are  directly  affected  by  the  activities  of  the Organization. The Port of Piraeus including all its facilities, extends beyond the boundaries of the historic port and  the  municipality  of  Piraeus,  in  the  areas  of  Drapetsona,  Keratsini,  Salamina  and  Perama. 

More specifically, the  Port  of  Piraeus  lies  within  the  urban  fabric,  while  it  forms  part  of  the community.  The  entire  city  of  Piraeus  has  developed  historically  around  the  port  and  currently  in  the immediate  vicinity  lies  a  thriving  business  center  which  expands  into  residential  areas,  shopping  and commercial centers. The wider influence of the port spans several municipalities within the Attica region all with a highly urban and commercial character.
