EFFECTIVE PACKAGING RECYCLING PROGRAM IN BUILDINGS AND SERVICES OF THE HELLENIC POLICE

Environmental protection – development of ecological awareness among Hellenic Police personnel – reciprocal benefit

The program is automatically renewed between the contracting parties, until one of the two parties objects.
In order for our Agency to implement the provisions of articles 7 §3 and 12 §3 of Law 4496/2017 "Amendment of Law 2939/2001 on the alternative management of packaging and other products, adaptation to Directive 2015/720/EU, regulation of issues of the Greek Recycling Organization and other provisions, from which arises the obligation for Public Services, Legal Entities, Public Enterprises and Local Authorities to ensure the separate collection of individual packaging materials, made of glass, plastic, metals and paper, prompted the investigation of the possibility implementation of a recycling program in buildings and services of the Hellenic Police. In 2018, the will of the political and physical Leadership of the Corps was expressed to undertake actions towards environmental protection, resulting in the conclusion of a Cooperation Agreement between the Hellenic Police, represented by the Hellenic Police Care & Excellence Foundation and the company "Rewarding Recycling S.A.". The implementation of the pilot program was initially implemented, in June 2018, in ten (10) facilities, where police services are housed, and gradually was expanded to another twelve (12) points – Services. Since 2019, the implementation of the program has been fully implemented and since then, until today, it has been applied to police services throughout the Mainland and Crete. The entire process of implementing the program has essentially been an innovation in Public Organizations given that, for its implementation, not only is the state budget not burdened, but with the reciprocal benefit of €0.03, offered by the company, for each recyclable packaging, a significant amount of money is collected. The resulting reciprocal benefit is initially transferred to the Orphan Children Account, which is kept at the Hellenic Police Foundation for Care and Excellence, a fact that demonstrates the social face of the action. Furthermore, in addition to the financial support of this sensitive social group, the entire action was originally intended to in activating or awakening the ecological consciousness of the personnel of the Hellenic Police and the adoption of habits that protect the environment. The entire project was implemented for the first time in a Public Entity and served as a model for subsequent Public Entities that joined a similar program.

Initially, the program contributed to the development of the ecological awareness of the staff for the protection of the environment. Clear instructions have been given on the method and purpose of recycling packaging at source, which seem to be adhered to by the majority of the participating Services. Furthermore, the reciprocal benefit resulting from the delivery of recyclable materials significantly strengthens the above Account, transforming into practice the social dimension of the program's implementation. Indicatively, the total amounts per year are shown in the following table:

The reward recycling program is implemented throughout the mainland and Crete, in police services as well as in police academies.
