Objective Action

The Euroclinic Group’s initiative in Patmos was designed to address a critical healthcare gap faced by residents of remote islands, due to the lack of essential medical infrastructure and specialized doctors. Its main objective was to ensure equal access to high-quality preventive examinations, with an emphasis on the early detection of breast cancer – the most common form of cancer in women – and on endocrinological screening, which concerns a significant number of both men and women.

At the same time, the initiative aimed to foster a culture of prevention, promoting a holistic approach to health that included not only free examinations, education, and the empowerment of the local community, but also the assurance of continuity of care. Women with findings received further investigation and treatment at Euroclinic without any financial burden, while thyroid biopsies were also performed where deemed necessary, ensuring comprehensive care.In this way, the initiative sought to reduce geographic inequalities in healthcare, strengthen citizens’ trust in prevention, and highlight the value of collaboration between private institutions, local communities, and health organizations.

Target Audience

The initiative of the Euroclinic Group was primarily addressed to the residents of Patmos and the surrounding islands, such as Lipsi, who lack access to specialized medical services. It was addressed primarily to women aged 25 and over for breast cancer screening, to both men and women for endocrinological examinations, while also providing an opportunity for the local community to be informed through the awareness event.

At the same time, the audience also included vulnerable groups who are unable to travel outside the island for medical examinations, while the initiative served as a tool for empowering the local community by raising awareness on prevention and early diagnosis

Duration

The initiative lasted 3 days and took place from 11 to 13 October 2024 in Patmos, in the context of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Description

The program lasted three (3) days and took place from 11 to 13 October 2024 on the island of Patmos, as part of October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was designed to address a critical healthcare gap for the residents of Patmos and Lipsi, who lack easy access to specialized medical services, by providing free, high-quality examinations that promote prevention and early diagnosis.

The 12-member team of Euroclinic Athens and the Hellenic Cancer Society included specialized doctors, nurses, radiology technicians, and administrative staff. The team traveled to the island with all the necessary medical equipment, including the Hellenic Cancer Society’s Mobile Digital Mammography Unit, to conduct the examinations.

In total, 547 free examinations were carried out, including:
• 108 mammograms
• 126 breast ultrasounds
• 126 clinical breast examinations
• 97 endocrinological examinations
• 90 thyroid ultrasounds

Furthermore, women in whom findings required further investigation were referred to Euroclinic in Athens, where they underwent free biopsies and, where necessary, surgical procedures. This continuity of care highlights the holistic approach of the program and Euroclinic Group’s commitment to actively supporting women’s health.

The program was complemented by an open awareness event at the “Patmion” Cultural Center, where the participating doctors highlighted the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as critical endocrinological health issues such as thyroid disorders and menopause.

A particularly innovative element of the 2024 program was the inclusion of endocrinological screening in the prevention actions, expanding both the social and medical impact of the mission.

Finally, the mission went beyond the provision of medical examinations. It emphasized personal contact, human communication, and the empowerment of residents, creating a climate of trust and contributing to the establishment of a culture of prevention in a remote island community.

  • Prevention & early diagnosis: A total of 547 free examinations were conducted, allowing the identification of suspicious findings that would otherwise have remained undiagnosed.
  • Continuity of care: Women with findings requiring further investigation were referred to Euroclinic, where they underwent free biopsies and, where necessary, surgical procedures. In addition, thyroid fine-needle aspirations were performed when indicated. At the same time, the support of the 2nd Regional Health Authority of Piraeus and Aegean Islands, the Municipality of Patmos, and the local community was decisive, as they actively participated in the organization and in informing residents.
