BeeAutism – Creating Opportunities for Social and Professional Inclusion Through Beekeeping

BUSINESS: 639 PRACTICES

The BeeAutism initiative aims to promote the social and professional inclusion of individuals on the autism spectrum through education and active participation in beekeeping.
The initiative seeks to create meaningful opportunities for skills development, empowerment and financial support, while highlighting participants' capabilities and helping challenge social stereotypes.
At the same time, BeeAutism aims to raise awareness of the importance of equal participation in professional and social life and to demonstrate how beekeeping can connect social inclusion with biodiversity protection.
Through BeeAutism, APIVITA seeks to demonstrate how collaboration between businesses, academic institutions and civil society organizations can generate measurable social value.

BeeAutism primarily targets individuals on the autism spectrum, with five direct beneficiaries participating in beekeeping training and activities.
The initiative also addresses their families, the wider disability community, educational and scientific institutions, and organizations working in social inclusion and professional empowerment.
Furthermore, through product distribution and communication activities, BeeAutism engages consumers, APIVITA employees and business partners, as well as the broader public, raising awareness about autism and the importance of inclusion and equal opportunities.
BeeAutism was launched in 2025 and, following the successful sale of all 3,000 jars of honey, the initiative continues into 2026.
BeeAutism is a social inclusion initiative that combines beekeeping, education and professional empowerment for individuals on the autism spectrum. It is implemented through a collaboration between APIVITA, the University of Thessaly and the Larissa Autism Association, as part of APIVITA's international Billion Bees Program.
The initiative is based on the belief that meaningful social inclusion requires real opportunities for participation and skills development. Five individuals on the autism spectrum take part in structured beekeeping activities, gaining practical experience and actively contributing to the production process.
The project includes participant training, the management of productive beehives, honey production and the distribution of honey through APIVITA's support.
In 2025, the initiative involved 100 productive beehives and approximately 1,500 kg of honey production. APIVITA purchased 3,000 jars of honey and undertook their distribution through its commercial network. 100% of sales revenue is directed towards supporting the five participants.
The innovative aspect of BeeAutism lies in connecting social inclusion with real productive activity and establishing a collaborative model involving the private sector, academia and civil society.
APIVITA's contribution goes beyond financial support, helping create a pathway from education and production to market access and consumer awareness.
In this way, BeeAutism demonstrates how beekeeping can serve as a means of empowerment, social participation and awareness, while connecting corporate responsibility with business activities.
BeeAutism has generated tangible and measurable outcomes, combining skills development, participation in productive activities and financial support for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Key results of the initiative in 2025:
Beyond quantitative results, the initiative provides opportunities to develop practical and social skills, strengthen self-confidence and participate actively in a real production process.
BeeAutism also contributes to raising public awareness of the capabilities of individuals on the autism spectrum, demonstrating the potential of collaborative approaches to social inclusion.
The value of the initiative extends beyond financial support, creating opportunities for meaningful participation and demonstrating a collaborative model with potential for further development.
Larissa, where beekeeping and educational activities take place at the Applied Beekeeping Laboratory of the University of Thessaly, and across Greece, through the distribution of honey in selected pharmacies.

Larissa Autism Association: Supports the implementation of the initiative, contributing to the empowerment of the five beneficiaries and helping ensure that activities respond to the needs of individuals on the autism spectrum.
APIVITA: Provides financial and operational support through the Billion Bees Program, purchasing and distributing the honey produced while also promoting the initiative and raising public awareness.
This collaboration represents a partnership between business, academia and civil society, focused on creating meaningful opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Employee engagement and awareness represent an important dimension of BeeAutism, connecting APIVITA's corporate responsibility commitments with its organizational culture.
Through the initiative, APIVITA employees have the opportunity to learn about the work of the five participants on the autism spectrum, understand the potential of beekeeping as a means of social and professional inclusion, and recognize the value of collaboration between businesses and social organizations.
An important element is the participation of the five beekeepers at an awareness-raising activity at APIVITA's premises on 20/5/2026, providing opportunities for direct interaction with employees and recognition of the participants' efforts and achievements. At the same time, APIVITA's Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility team contributes to coordinating the partnership, supporting the initiative and communicating its outcomes.
Through these activities, BeeAutism promotes employee awareness of diversity, equal opportunities and social inclusion.
APIVITA's involvement in BeeAutism strengthens the integration of social responsibility into its business activities, connecting the company's longstanding relationship with bees and beekeeping with its commitment to supporting vulnerable social groups.
