Description

As part of the initiatives, we take as a company in the field of Health & Safety, the Company has developed a training program for Rescue crews and fire safety teams with the innovative FLAIM TRAINER system. The organization and execution of the program was implemented by the Rescue Team of the Kassandra Mines. Hellas Gold is the first company in Greece to make long-term use of the system from December 6, 2021, and for 2 months, while it is among the first two companies to introduce the program. This training system is also used, among others, by the world's two leading mining and quarrying companies, BHP and Rio Tinto, as well as by NASA and the US Air Force, while the multiple benefits of the FLAIM Trainer are further highlighted in the official magazine of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association, USA).

It is an innovative training system through virtual reality technology (Virtual Reality) where, through different scenarios, trainees evaluate in almost real conditions, the way they think and act, under the guidance of a specialized trainer who is with them throughout the educational process. FLAIM was developed through 10 years of research by the Research and Innovation Institute of Deakin University (Australia). FLAIM's algorithms mimic real-world fire behavior, including movement, smoke, flashovers, and explosions. FLAIM Trainer combines high-fidelity virtual fire environments with real-time physical environments to deliver the feel of a true virtual training experience aimed at safely preparing firefighters and first responders for the dangers associated with firefighting.

Impact on Society

The results showed that 80% of the users made a correct assessment of the risk, while 70% and 80% made an incorrect use of hose/flute and waste of water respectively. Combined with the fact that similar evaluations in the past gave better results, it is reasonable to conclude that the reduction in training due to the pandemic has influenced the practical abilities of the participants and we consider that with FLAIM we have made the best possible choice and look forward to its permanent inclusion system in our new Training Center.

In this program, 81.13% of the members of the rescue crews and fire safety teams were trained, while in an initiative to develop our cooperation with the fire brigades of the area, the fire fighters  of the Fire Brigades of the Municipality of Aristotle and the wider area participated in the training, who praised the offer and the benefits of the program, while at the same time being a tangible target example for all participants (you can see their statements, in the context of their presence at the latest FLAIM training, in the following video:

Initiative Location

In all of Hellas Golds' installations, in all its mining projects and administrative facilities.

Working with Organization

Local Fire Departments of the area participated in the Flam Trainer trainings to learn about and be trained in this innovative system.

Workers Participation

The employees voluntarily participate in the company's rescue team and in the trainings. Through virtual reality, realistic fire or wildfire scenarios that our rescue teams may encounter at any time in the work environment are visualized. Through customization with a Tablet device, the instructor can switch the scenarios between easy, difficult, or even very difficult so that the user understands that conditions can change at any time. At the same time, personalized training is possible, depending on the user's training level.
