SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE REGION OF WESTERN GREECE

The strengthening of green entrepreneurship and the promotion of green investments in the Region of Western Greece

The initiatives to support sustainable green development are addressing first and second level self-governments, producer groups, cooperatives, universities, NGOs, start ups and new corporate schemes, Social Cooperative Enterprises (SCE) civil societies. The above bodies should actively contribute to the strengthening of green entrepreneurship and more broadly to the green transition of local economies.

 

2019 until now

The strengthening of "green" entrepreneurship and the promotion of "green" investments are a key priority for the Regional Authority of the Region of Western Greece. The Region of Western Greece ranks among the first regions in the number of "green" business licensing and has now achieved, in cooperation with its competent services: a) the reduction of bureaucratic procedures, b) the acceleration of the relevant licensing, c) the promotion of economic activities of the circular economy and development of soft forms of energy. At the same time, the Region of Western Greece encourages the increase of projects that are part of waste management, recycling and the utilization of biomass for energy and organic agriculture". The operation of these activities has resulted in a large positive environmental footprint and job creation, especially in a difficult economic period.

Supporting businesses through funding programs and financing, claiming through communication with the relevant ministries their sustainable development

Participation of the employees of the relevant departments in all the Regional Units of the Region of Western Greece.

Region of Western Greece

Operation of non-hazardous waste treatment units and parallel energy production whose object is the management and energy utilization of biomass resulting as waste and sub-products from agricultural, livestock, and other related activities, with parallel energy production, and in particular co-production of electricity and heat, while through the process of composting the circular economy is strengthened and sustainable agriculture is improved with a direct benefit to local producers, while at the same time proper waste management is achieved with a direct positive impact on the environment. Also, strengthening RES as a basis for the economic development model of the green economy. Thus, a contribution is made to the decentralization of the energy system, covering needs at local and regional level. More specifically, 400 green businesses have been founded, operated and strengthened in the circular economy and soft forms of energy.

The Region of Western Greece, by strengthening green entrepreneurship, puts the protection of the environment and nature, in general, at the center of its strategy and tries to improve economic growth through the creation of new jobs in green businesses.
