The PPC Group implements a Strategic Plan for Green Energy Transition aimed at reducing its carbon footprint across all its activities and supporting the country’s climate neutrality goals.

Specifically, the Group’s business strategy is based on an integrated model structured around three main pillars:

  • Decarbonization and development of clean energy technologies
  • Modernization and expansion of distribution networks
  • Affordable and smart energy supply.

In October 2024, the Group’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets were validated by the global initiative SBTi, confirming their alignment with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

By linking the Transition Plan with the three strategic pillars presented, the Group defines the following four decarbonization mechanisms:
•  lignite phase-out,
• Strengthening of the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) portfolio
• Modernization of the electricity distribution network
• Electrification.

This approach highlights PPC Group’s commitment to lead in its sectors of operation and promote the implementation of meaningful changes for the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy, creating long-term value for all stakeholders. The transition extends beyond achieving emission reduction targets in its own activities to efforts supporting a holistic restructuring of sustainable energy practices in the energy sector.

Employee participation is a fundamental pillar of the initiative, with numerous internal actions and training programs that promote sustainable development, enhance their awareness, and cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility. Executives from various departments and divisions of the Group, as well as representatives from all subsidiary companies, actively participate both in shaping the strategic plan and in its implementation, ensuring its holistic integration within the organization.

Within the framework of the Group’s strategic plan for green energy transition and carbon footprint reduction, a coherent and multi-level action plan is being implemented across the four main decarbonization mechanisms: lignite phase-out, strengthening of the renewable energy sources (RES) portfolio, modernization of the distribution network, and electrification.

Below is an indicative report for the year 2024:

The Group has achieved a 55% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from power generation compared to 2019 levels, a result of accelerated decarbonization and the integration of clean technologies. The Group’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets (including emissions from power generation) were validated in 2024 by the global Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), scientifically confirming their alignment with the Paris Agreement and the 1.5°C scenario.

In the field of electric mobility and transportation electrification, by the end of 2024, the Group operated over 2,500 public charging points across more than 670 locations nationwide, enhancing accessibility to sustainable mobility and contributing to the country’s emission reductions.

The retirement of lignite power units totaling 1.9 MW, already carried out within the transition plan, along with their gradual replacement by clean production units, significantly reduces annual greenhouse gas emissions.

At the same time, the total installed capacity of Renewable Energy Sources has increased to 5.5 GW in 2024 compared to 3.4 GW in 2021, strengthening the Group’s clean energy footprint and making its production mix more sustainable.

The implementation of the Green Energy Transition Plan strategically strengthens the position of PPC Group as a leader in sustainable energy, both in Greece and Southeastern Europe. The shift towards clean energy sources, the gradual retirement of lignite units, and the increased share of Renewable Energy Sources in the Group’s production reduce its exposure to regulatory and financial risks related to carbon dioxide emissions and the cost of emission rights.

At the same time, adopting scientifically backed greenhouse gas reduction targets, combined with transparency in reporting and public disclosure of related metrics, significantly enhances the Group’s credibility within the investment community. This approach facilitates access to green financing, while further strengthening the Group’s profile as a responsible and strategically focused organization in the field of sustainable development.

Investment in the electrification of the economy, through the installation of charging networks and the promotion of electric mobility, highlights PPC social role as a driver of change toward a cleaner and more sustainable future, creating a multiplying impact beyond the company’s own boundaries.

Finally, alignment with societal and regulatory expectations, together with the active participation of employees, enhances corporate reputation, fosters a culture of responsibility, and lays the foundation for a resilient and competitive business model in the emerging new energy landscape.
