Program for bees “adoption” in high biodiversity value areas | ||||
TITAN Group is implementing a pilot bee "adoption" program aimed at protecting biodiversity in the Group’s Agrinio quarry. The initiative aligns with TITAN’s ESG goals for 2025 and beyond, while also serves as a key pillar of the European Sectoral Biodiversity Roadmap 2030. Under the distinctive title Bee-lding a Better World Together and in collaboration with the NGO Bee for Planet, the program involves the installation of approximately 400,000 bees at the quarry and their monitoring with scientific tools to assess how they interact with the biodiversity of the surrounding area. The bees are expected to pollinate over 1.7 billion flowers and plants annually, creating a healthy haven for the region's flora and fauna. |

Overview of the Project TITAN Group selected the Agrinio Quarry, located in the village of Lepenou, to implement this pilot biodiversity protection program. The program involves the installation of 20 beehives, housing 400,000 bees, and their monitoring through scientific tools to evaluate their impact on the area's biodiversity. This is the first TITAN Group quarry where such an initiative is carried out, and the results are eagerly anticipated. About Biodiversity Protecting biodiversity, particularly in high-value areas, is a fundamental pillar of TITAN’s sustainability strategy. For many years, the company has implemented targeted actions in the areas where it operates or in neighboring regions. A key focus of these actions is the restoration of quarries where operations have ceased. TITAN prioritizes areas where threatened or protected species of flora and fauna exist, aiming to safeguard the local ecosystems. At Group level, biodiversity related matters are supported by partnerships with international organizations and associations, as well as global collaborations. A notable example is TITAN's leading role in drafting the policy document of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) titled «A Commitment to Biodiversity by the Cement and Concrete Industry», published in early 2021. Additionally, this document was integrated into the Biodiversity and Industry Platform of the European CSR Network—a cross-sectoral business initiative aimed at highlighting the role of companies in promoting biodiversity and supporting businesses in practically incorporating biodiversity into their decision-making processes. Bee-lding: Together for a better world Protecting biodiversity goes hand in hand with the protection of bees, which are the planet’s primary pollinators. These miraculous insects, revered since ancient times and known for their highly organized hive life, provide not only honey—a complete food—but also propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and pollen. Pollination occurs as bees transfer pollen from flower to flower, making it no exaggeration to say that life on Earth would be at risk without them. For the first time, TITAN Group is implementing an innovative pilot program at one of its quarries, placing bees at the forefront of biodiversity conservation, while the company has already introduced a specialized Biodiversity Management Plan.at the Agrinio Quarry. In collaboration with the NGO Bee for Planet, 20 beehives have been installed, which will be maintained while scientifically monitoring their interaction with the region’s biodiversity. These beehives will house approximately 400,000 bees, expected to pollinate over 1.7 billion flowers and plants annually, creating a thriving natural habitat for the area’s flora and fauna. This groundbreaking initiative is named Bee-lding a Better World Together, combining the word Bee with TITAN’s new slogan, Building a Better World Together. The goal is to establish a bee “adoption” program that will significantly contribute to protecting biodiversity in high-value areas. |

With the aim of creating a safe, sustainable, and enjoyable world, TITAN presents Bee-lding a Better World Together as another significant step toward sustainability. The program harnesses the wisdom of bees and their undeniable role in environmental preservation. Though still in its initial phase, the expected outcomes offer a perspective on how traditional practices can be combined with modern scientific methods to formulate solutions for the environment. |
