The first island-based Municipal Green Point: a pioneering and innovative circular economy implementation on the island of Milos

The Municipality of Milos is implementing a new Local Waste Management Plan that places particular emphasis on reuse and recycling, transforming waste management from a challenge into a development opportunity for the island.

To achieve this goal, the Municipal Authority, with the support of its Technical Services Department, has undertaken all the necessary actions since 2020 to secure the required site, complete the environmental studies and licensing process through the specialised consultancy firm EPTA Consultants & Engineers, secure funding from the South Aegean Region under the NSRF Regional Operational Programme (ROP) South Aegean 2014–2020, and oversee the construction of the facility. Today, the project is ready to commence operations under the management of the specialized company N.K. Goliopoulos S.A., as the first island Municipal Green Point in Greece.

The Municipality of Milos initiative serves the following objectives:

  • Promoting the waste management hierarchy, with a strong focus on reuse and recycling through source separation.
  • Raising environmental awareness and encouraging active citizen participation through environmental education.
  • Recovering high-purity recyclable materials as a result of separate collection systems.
  • Enhancing cost-effectiveness and value recovery through the utilization of collected materials.
  • Reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill and, consequently, lowering waste management costs for the Municipality.
  • Ensuring compliance with current legislative and regulatory requirements regarding waste management.
