TITAN CEMENT COMPANY S.A.

The first aggregates quarry to obtain an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Aggregates in Greece and Europe

True to our commitment to embracing the practical applications of the circular economy model, with Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) we mark our product and process excellence and make a dynamic contribution to the global action for climate change mitigation and transition to carbon neutrality. We place great emphasis on providing relevant information and promoting the importance of EPDs throughout the value chain of the construction industry and especially among our associates and customers. In order to further increase the value offered to our customers, in 2022 we issued a third-party verified EPD for limestone aggregates at Xirorema Quarry, following the publication of EPDs for cement, concrete and dry mortars.

With the publication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) we aim at creating value for our customers and other stakeholders in the construction value chain.

Stepping up its actions for the transition to sustainable and climate-neutral construction projects, TITAN has issued Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) since 2021 for its cement and key ready mix concrete products in Greece. Specifically, EPDs have been issued for all types of cement (bulk or packaged) produced in the Kamari, Efkarpia and Drepano plants and destined for both the domestic and international markets, as well as for most commercial ready mixed concrete and dry mortar products.

In 2022, we issued a third-party verified EPD for limestone aggregates at Xirorema quarry, which became the first limestone aggregate quarry in Greece and Europe, that has been verified within the framework of “The International EPD System” with an EPD. The drafting of the EPD involves a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report for the eleven aggregates produced at the Xirorema quarry, of which nine are being produced after several individual crushing and sieving processes that take place in primary and secondary crushing facilities and the other two are mixes of individual fractions. The scope of the study includes raw materials (limestone) extraction from limestone quarry, transportation facility and manufacturing (crushing, sieving). The findings of the analysis are expressed via specific indicators such as the Global Warming Potential-GWP (CO2 equivalent). These indicators are internationally accepted, measurable, valid and objective, and concern the aspects of environmental performance, resource consumption, and the production and reuse of waste.

The EPD is compliant with ISO 14025 and 14040/44 as well as with the ΕΝ 15804 standard, and the findings have been verified by an independent accredited agency. The EPD is published in “The International EPD System”, the broadly used platform where any interested parties (industry professionals or citizens) can access all EPD of our products.

The EPD was developed in collaboration with the environmental consultants "EcoVibes", and it was verified by an independent accredited agency.

Xirorema Quarry (Attica)

Through the program “The International EPD System”, TITAN receives comparable information on the environmental impact and life cycle performance of a product. Utilizing this information, TITAN ensures environmental excellence throughout the life cycle of its products, from the production process to the final offering to its customers. Our quarry environmental excellence not only embraces the practical application of the circular economy model but also contributes dynamically to global action for climate change mitigation and transition to carbon neutrality, with the optimal use of resources, taking an important step in TITAN’s effort for a better and more sustainable future for all.

Following the publication and update of third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations for all cement and key concrete and mortar products produced in Greece, we developed an EPD for limestone aggregates for the Xirorema quarry, marking our product and process excellence and supplying customers with the information they need for sustainable construction. With EPDs we establish an environmental basis for further improvement of our environmental impact which can eventually lead to saving financial resources, while we confirm their validity through annual inspections, following the Group’s commitment to accelerate the reduction of its carbon footprint with innovative products and solutions.
