Creating Job Opportunities for People with Intellectual Disabilities

Electra Hotels and Resorts partners with the Vocational Training Centre “Margarita” to support its mission and provide supported employment opportunities for neurodiverse individuals and people with intellectual disabilities. The program promotes equal social inclusion by helping individuals with intellectual disabilities enter the workforce, earn an income, and engage in meaningful social interactions. The initiative was inspired by Electra’s human-centric approach, which emphasizes giving back to society through ethical commitments. At the same time, it aligns with the long-standing commitment of VTC “Margarita” to social responsibility and the inclusion of intellectual diversity in society, as well as to fostering empowerment and visibility for these groups.

In collaboration with the Vocational Training Centre (VTC) “Margarita”, a three-stage program was implemented to empower adults with intellectual disabilities.

In the first stage, through a comprehensive job shadowing program, individuals with intellectual disabilities supported by VTC “Margarita” visited our hotels and became familiar with the working environment, daily operations, and the specific demands of the hospitality industry. This hands-on experience allowed them to gain valuable insights into the various roles and responsibilities within the sector.

In the second stage, specialized training seminars were delivered to our hotel staff. This training focused on fostering a supportive and accessible work environment for colleagues with disabilities. It covered best practices in communication, accessibility considerations, and the development of a culture based on empathy, respect, and appropriate workplace conduct.

As a third and final stage, Electra Group took a significant step forward by hiring an individual with an intellectual disability in 2024, actively contributing to their professional integration and demonstrating our tangible commitment to diversity and inclusion. This initiative not only created meaningful employment opportunities but also enriched our working environment with diverse perspectives and talents.

Following the initial successful collaboration and with the aim of further strengthening the initiative, we expanded the same inclusion process for individuals with intellectual disabilities to other two Electra Hotels in Athens.

Today, each of the Group’s three hotels in Athens has integrated one individual with an intellectual disability into its workforce, supporting a total of three individuals through the program.

The supported employment provided by Electra Hotels and Resorts has generated multiple benefits for all stakeholders, fostering a deeper understanding and meaningful acceptance of people with disabilities. At the same time, the initiative has strengthened internal relationships among employees, enhancing the quality of their interactions and cultivating greater empathy in their daily work environment.
